Efficient biostimulants for bacterial quorum quenching to control fouling in MBR

Huaorng Yu et al.

Summary: This study explored various potential bio-stimuli for quorum quenching enhancement in activated sludge, identifying compounds like gamma-caprolactone, D-xylonic acid-1,4-lactone, and urea as effective in promoting inactivating activity. Through entrapment, these bio-stimuli effectively disrupted quorum sensing in membrane bioreactors.

Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production through a short-term anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Synergistic pretreatment of alkali and alkaline hydrolase blend

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alkaline hydrolase blend (AHB) incubation at initial pH 10.0 condition for enhancing anaerobic fermentation in waste activated sludge management. The results show that this method significantly increased the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and promoted the hydrolysis and biodegradation of dissolved organic matters. The AHB-based strategy proves to be a cost-effective and carbon-beneficial technology for sludge management.

Superhydrophobic-omniphobic membrane with anti-deformable pores for membrane distillation with excellent wetting resistance

Zhigao Zhu et al.

Summary: A membrane with robust wetting resistance was developed by integrating superhydrophobic-omniphobic surface and anti-deformable pores. It exhibits excellent wetting resistance when concentrating high salinity solutions and the mechanism includes chemical stabilization of the surface-bound air layer and structural stabilization through anti-deformable pores.

Evaluation of applying membrane distillation for landfill leachate treatment

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that landfill leachate can be efficiently treated using membrane distillation, achieving excellent rejection rates for organic carbon, phosphate, and metal ions under all tested conditions. The rejection rate of ammonia nitrogen can be increased by feed acidification, enhancing membrane fouling resistance. Additionally, energy consumption analysis indicated that waste heat from an incineration plant is sufficient to drive on-site treatment using MD.

Effect of biopolymers and humic substances on gypsum scaling and membrane wetting during membrane distillation

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: The impact of organic compounds, including biopolymers and humic substances, on gypsum scaling in membrane distillation (MD) is investigated. The presence of organic fouling layer has limited effect on gypsum scaling, while dissolved organics in feedwater generally postpone instead of accelerate gypsum scaling. Different types of organic compounds exhibit varying effects on gypsum scaling in MD processes.

M. M. Zico et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a solar-driven modified membrane distillation system in recovering ammonia from landfill leachate, achieving a maximum removal rate of 98% and a recovery rate of 59%. The production of ammonium sulfate solution from the recovered ammonia for use as fertilizer demonstrated better economic performance, potentially reducing the total treatment cost of leachate.

Application of membrane separation technology in the treatment of leachate in China: A review

Weiming Chen et al.

Summary: Membrane separation technologies, mainly nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), have been widely used in China for treating landfill leachate. The technologies are mainly concentrated in eastern and southwestern China, where municipal solid waste (MSW) is relatively high. However, the membrane retentate produced by the technology is heavily contaminated, posing a significant challenge.

Effects of oxidation on humic-acid-enhanced gypsum scaling in different nanofiltration phases: Performance, mechanisms and prediction by differential log-transformed absorbance spectroscopy

Dachao Lin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of oxidation on humic-acid-enhanced gypsum scaling in different nanofiltration phases, revealing mechanisms on short-term and long-term membrane flux behaviors, and assessing the reliability of using differential log transformed absorbance spectroscopy to predict membrane fouling. Short-term membrane fouling increased with NaClO dosage, while long-term fouling decreased after an initial increase. The research also highlighted the importance of interaction between organic matters and inorganic ions in predicting membrane fouling.

Effective treatment of leachate concentrate using membrane distillation coupled with electrochemical oxidation

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the sequential electrochemical oxidation and membrane distillation process can effectively treat leachate concentrate with salinity and biorefractory organics characteristics. By utilizing direct and indirect oxidation on the Ti/PbO2 anode, organic fouling can be minimized. Membrane distillation is efficient in treating the electrolyzed concentrate due to its high rejection of salt and non-volatile components, and the addition of antiscalant can prevent scaling.
