Solar disinfection of fungal spores in water: Kinetics, influencing factors, mechanisms and regrowth

Yuancheng Xia et al.

Summary: Water contamination with fungi has been a growing concern, with solar disinfection (SODIS) emerging as a potential method, particularly for developing countries. Research on SODIS process revealed that P. polonicum was more sensitive to simulated sunlight than A. niger, higher concentration of humic acid inhibited solar inactivation efficiency, and inactivation efficiency was related to optimal growth temperatures. SODIS was found to control waterborne fungi effectively, with mechanisms involving endogenous actions and potential regrowth in nutrient-rich water.

Degradation of neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine by UV254 activated persulfate: Kinetic model and reaction pathways

Boyin Yan et al.

Summary: The degradation of BMAA in the UV254/persulfate system follows a pseudofirst-order kinetic model, with SO4· identified as the major radical contributing to the degradation. The pH significantly affects the degradation rate, with the highest rate achieved at pH 8. However, the presence of water matrix components inhibits the degradation process.

Kinetics and efficacy of membrane/DNA damage to Bacillus subtilis and autochthonous bacteria during UV/chlorine treatment under different pH and irradiation wavelengths

Ji Wu et al.

Summary: UV/chlorine treatment enhances the kinetics and efficacy of cell membrane or DNA damage to B. subtilis compared to UV irradiation or chlorination alone. The in-situ generation of radical species HO center dot and Cl center dot around intracellular DNA might contribute to these enhancements. The study provides surrogate indicators for determining the minimal chlorine dose for effective inactivation of bacteria during UV/chlorine treatment by using CTFAC values and decreasing UVA254 levels.

Wavelength-dependent time?dose reciprocity and stress mechanism for UV-LED disinfection of Escherichia coli

Dana Pousty et al.

Summary: The efficiency of UV disinfection by low-pressure mercury lamps depends on UV fluence, but the time-dose reciprocity may not always apply. The inactivation of E. coli by UV-LEDs differs at different central wavelengths, with each causing different levels of DNA damage or oxidative stress. UV-LED265 showed higher DNA damage, while UV-LED285 and UV-LED295 caused more oxidative stress.

Bacterial inactivation, photoreactivation and dark repair post flow-through pulsed UV disinfection

Kelly Fitzhenry et al.

Summary: Pulsed UV technology is widely used for disinfection in the food packaging industry but has not been adopted by the water/wastewater sector due to lack of robust data. This study evaluated the efficacy of PUV for water disinfection under flow-through conditions and found that the sensitivity and resistance of bacteria to PUV treatment varied. It is important to avoid exposing treated bacteria to natural light immediately after PUV treatment to minimize photoreactivation.

UV disinfection studies on chlorine tolerant bacteria recovered from treated sewage

Sandeep Singh Shekhawat et al.

Summary: The study found that chlorine-tolerant bacterium Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is resistant to UV due to its high regrowth potential post-irradiation. In contrast, E.coli and Klebsiella sp. were effectively reduced by UV exposure. This resistance in S. maltophilia may be attributed to cellular aggregation and possible Mn accumulation, as further studies are needed to confirm the mechanism of UV resistance.
