Coexistence of polyethylene microplastics and biochar increases ammonium sorption in an aqueous solution

Xiaona Li et al.

Summary: Biochar is commonly used for NH4+ removal from wastewater, and in this study, the interaction between microplastics and biochars in the sorption of NH4+ was investigated. Results suggest that microplastics can adsorb NH4+ and enhance the NH4+ sorption capacity of biochars.

Goethite dispersed corn straw-derived biochar for phosphate recovery from synthetic urine and its potential as a slow-release fertilizer

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, goethite-biochar composites were developed and used for phosphate recovery from urine. The amorphous structure of the composites showed higher adsorption capacity compared to crystalline goethite, making it a promising alternative for slow-phosphate-release fertilizers. The active sites for phosphate adsorption were identified as the Fe-OH bonds forming inner-sphere complexes.

Huan Xi et al.

Summary: Novel alginate immobilized Zr-bentonite hydrogel beads (NH-SA-ZrBT) synthesized in this study exhibit high stability and adsorption selectivity for phosphate removal. The adsorbent has a maximum adsorption capacity of 63.61 mg/g and retains 92.2% after five adsorption-desorption cycles, showing potential for application in complex wastewater treatment.

Metal chloride-loaded biochar for phosphorus recovery: Noteworthy roles of inherent minerals in precursor

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, composite biochars were prepared to recover phosphorus from wastewater, showing that different mineral contents in biowastes can affect P sorption and precipitation. Loading of FeCl3 and MgCl2 improved the P adsorption capacity of biochar, but the choice of metal chloride should be based on the inherent minerals in the biowastes.
