An Optoelectronics-Based Sensor for Measuring Multi-Axial Shear Stresses

Michael A. McGeehan et al.

Summary: An RGB LED-based optoelectronic sensor was designed in this study to measure multi-axial shear stresses, suitable for orthopedic devices such as prostheses or shoes. The sensor, simple and low-cost, determines shear forces by capturing reflected light intensity and demonstrated efficacy under benchtop testing conditions, showing promise for future medical applications.

Concept of an In-Plane Displacement Sensor Based on Grating Interferometry with a Stepwise Change of Sensitivity

Leszek Salbut et al.

Summary: Grating Interferometry, also known as High Sensitivity Moire Interferometry, is a method for measuring in-plane displacement and strain, with sensitivity depending on the spatial frequency of the grating attached to the object under test. By using specimen gratings with different spatial frequencies, different sensitivities and measurement ranges can be achieved.

Shear-stress sensing by PIEZO1 regulates tendon stiffness in rodents and influences jumping performance in humans

Fabian S. Passini et al.

Summary: This study found that tenocytes detect mechanical forces through the mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZO1, influencing tendon stiffness and strength. Humans carrying specific mutations in PIEZO1 may exhibit higher athletic performance.
