The Role of Micro Pits in the Initiation Process of Crevice Corrosion of SUS304 Stainless Steel in an Aqueous Chloride Solution

Akira Nagaoka et al.

Summary: By comparing the corrosion potentials of micro pits with the critical potential for crevice corrosion, the role of micro pits as initiation sites for crevice corrosion was examined. It was revealed that under acidic conditions, micro pits were difficult to repassivate, potentially leading to the initiation of crevice corrosion. Investigating Cl- concentration and pH dependencies on each potential also helped in understanding the factors contributing to crevice corrosion initiation.
