Magnetic Field Mapping and Correction for Moving OP-MEG

Stephanie Mellor et al.

Summary: In this study, we modeled the spatial variation in the magnetic field of optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) and successfully predicted the movement artefacts in the dataset. By applying this model, a significant reduction in movement noise was achieved, allowing for the measurement of low-frequency brain activity during natural participant movement.

Cross-Axis projection error in optically pumped magnetometers and its implication for magnetoencephalography systems

Summary: The study demonstrates that significant cross-axis projection errors can be introduced into the output signal of optically pumped magnetometers, leading to a degradation in localization and calibration accuracy of the system.

Triaxial detection of the neuromagnetic field using optically-pumped magnetometry: feasibility and application in children

Elena Boto et al.

Summary: Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are a viable alternative to superconducting sensors for magnetoencephalography (MEG), with advantages such as flexibility, uniform coverage, better data quality, and lower cost. This study introduces a novel triaxial OPM sensor that can accurately and sensitively measure magnetic fields, showing comparable performance to conventional OPMs. A child-friendly 3D-printed OPM-helmet is also proposed, demonstrating the feasibility of triaxial measurement in pediatric populations.

Spatial sampling of MEG and EEG based on generalized spatial-frequency analysis and optimal design

Joonas Iivanainen et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the spatial sampling of EEG and MEG, proposing a new method to optimize sensor locations based on prior assumptions. Simulation results show that model-informed non-uniform sampling can be beneficial when the number of samples is small. Uniform sampling grids are as effective as model-informed grids when there are a large number of samples.

Precision magnetic field modelling and control for wearable magnetoencephalography

Molly Rea et al.

Summary: This study introduces the potential of optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) in magnetoencephalography (MEG) experiments and emphasizes the importance of controlling background magnetic fields. The authors propose a magnetic field mapping technique that accurately reconstructs field magnitude and compensates for it through an electromagnetic coil system, significantly reducing low-frequency interference. This technology can improve data quality in experiments, especially those measuring low-frequency oscillations or encouraging head movement.

Automatic coregistration of MRI and on-scalp MEG

Wenyu Gu et al.

Summary: A novel automatic filtering algorithm based on plane segmentation was proposed to locate on-scalp MEG sensors in 3D images reconstructed from optical scanning. Global image registration was employed for the automatic alignment of anatomical images and sensor positions. The deviations of the sensor location and orientation from the averaged result of 10 measurements were less than 1 mm and 0.6 degrees, respectively. The entire process could be completed in less than 4 min. Compared with existing methods that involve various manual procedures, such as moving digitizers to fiducials and repeatedly pulling out sensors, our proposed coregistration method is more efficient and accurate. An automatic method for the coregistration of anatomical structure and on-scalp sensors that will have a large impact on the practical use of on-scalp MEG is developed.
