Second-Order Cone Programming Relaxation of Stealthy Cyberattacks Resulting in Overvoltages in Cyber-Physical Power Systems

Javad Khazaei et al.

Summary: The study addresses the overvoltage issue introduced by deployment of photovoltaic generation in smart grids by proposing a nonlinear optimization model to combat overvoltages caused by cyberattacks. In contrast to existing dc state estimation research, the model utilizes ac state estimation in distribution grids to develop attack models. Through validation case studies, it is found that limiting FDIs on targeted nodes can effectively reduce overvoltages in distribution grids.

N-1 Reliability Makes It Difficult for False Data Injection Attacks to Cause Physical Consequences

Zhigang Chu et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates that false data injection (FDI) attacks are extremely limited in their ability to cause physical consequences on N - 1 reliable power systems operating with real-time contingency analysis (RTCA) and security constrained economic dispatch (SCED). Attacks designed using DCOPF fail to cause overflows on N - 1 reliable systems because the system response modeled is inaccurate. Therefore, it requires an extremely sophisticated attacker to cause physical consequences on N - 1 reliable power systems operated with RTCA and SCED.

Cyber attacks on PMU placement in a smart grid: Characterization and optimization

Weiyong Ding et al.

Summary: This paper examines the optimal PMU placement in a smart grid under cyber threats, presenting a probabilistic model for assessing grid risk and analyzing the impact of cyber factors on PMU placements. A novel 'greedy' algorithm with cyber risks is introduced to address the increasing unobservability risk in power systems.

A Novel Technique to Detect False Data Injection Attacks on Phasor Measurement Units

Saleh Almasabi et al.

Summary: The paper investigates false data injection attacks (FDIAs) for PMU-based state estimation, where PMUs are comparable, and shows that manipulation of one PMU can affect multiple states. A Phase Locking Value (PLV) technique is proposed to detect FDIAs, which demonstrated efficient performance on IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 30-bus test systems under different scenarios using Monte Carlo simulation.

Cyber Attack Detection Based on Wavelet Singular Entropy in AC Smart Islands: False Data Injection Attack

Moslem Dehghani et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new mechanism based on signal processing technique to detect any false data injection in AC-SE, by analyzing temporally consecutive system states. Utilizing wavelet singular entropy to analyze system states for cyber-attack detection has been proven to be highly efficient. The rapid detection capability and high accuracy rate of this detection method make it a promising approach in the field of cybersecurity.
