Ultrasound-based sensors for respiratory motion assessment in multimodality PET imaging

Bruno Madore et al.

Summary: Breathing motion is a primary factor limiting image quality in medical imaging and can complicate image fusion from different modalities. Currently available devices for monitoring breathing motion indirectly detect changes in torso outline. We have developed small ultrasound-based sensors that attach to the skin and provide rich motion-sensitive information, presenting a relatively inexpensive hardware solution for respiration monitoring.

Data-driven gated CT: An automated respiratory gating method to enable data-driven gated PET/CT

Tinsu Pan et al.

Summary: A new automated DDG CT method was developed to address misregistration and tumor motion issues in PET/CT imaging. DDG CT showed greater consistency in selecting end-expiratory phase images compared to the clinical standard of 4D CT. It appeared to be more robust in regions prone to misregistration and tumor motion, and provided improved attenuation correction for DDG PET relative to D4D CT. DDG CT offered the benefits of 4D CT without the need for external device gating, making it a promising tool in PET/CT imaging.

Impact of acquisition time and misregistration with CT on data-driven gated PET

M. Allan Thomas et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of PET acquisition time and CT misregistration on data-driven gating (DDG) results. The results showed that the acquisition time of DDG-PET had a significant effect on SUVmax and CNR, and the use of DDG-PET/CT further increased SUVmax and CNR. This suggests that accurate registration with DDG-CT is equally important for improving DDG-PET/CT results.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of DDG on PET image quality, lesion detection, and patient management, revealing that DDG provided reliable motion correction and changed clinical management in a considerable number of patients. DDG enables routine use of PET/CT with respiratory gating in clinical practice without the need for external gating equipment.

Summary: A new TOF-PEPT algorithm is introduced in this paper for specific respiratory motion estimation in PET/CT imaging. Results show high correlation between motion signals derived from TOF-PEPT and Anzai band, outperforming COM methods. Gated imaging based on TOF-PEPT improves image quality, with higher max SUVs and sharper images observed in clinical studies compared to Anzai and COM methods.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

FDG-PET Radiomics for Response Monitoring in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Treated with Radiation Therapy

Montserrat Carles et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify clinically relevant image feature (IF) changes during chemoradiation in NSCLC patients. By utilizing IF variability observed across 4D PET scans as a patient-specific normalization factor, statistically relevant IF changes during treatment are emphasized. Changes in deltaAUCCSH within the primary tumor during treatment can discriminate patients with and without LR, and this could be recommended for monitoring treatment response in NSCLC patients.

New Data-Driven Gated PET/CT Free of Misregistration Artifacts

Tinsu Pan et al.

Summary: A new data-driven gated positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) approach was developed to improve registration accuracy. The study showed that cine CT had lower scan coverage and effective radiation dose compared to repeat PET/CT, and using cine CT saved scan time by not requiring repeat PET. The DDG PET/CT method improved registration and quantification, reducing misregistration artifacts and enhancing image quality.

Summary: The study assessed the effects of a new DDG-PET/CT method on PET quantitation and lesion segmentation, finding that compared to baseline PET/CT, PET/ACT, DDG-PET, and DDG-PET/CT had median changes in SUVmax of 20%, 26%, and 66%, respectively. Different correction methods led to changes in lesion volume, LG, centroid-to-centroid distance, and DICE coefficients.
