Microplastic pollution in the Weser estuary and the German North Sea

Lisa Roscher et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and distribution of microplastics (MP) in the estuary and lower stretch of the Weser River in Germany, finding highest concentrations in the 11-500 micron size range with the polymer cluster acrylates/PUR/varnish being dominant. Estimated MP concentrations generally increased in the Turbidity Maximum Zone (TMZ) and decreased towards the open sea, providing valuable insights for future MP monitoring measures.

Microplastic Mass Concentrations and Distribution in German Bight Waters by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Thermochemolysis Reveal Potential Impact of Marine Coatings: Do Ships Leave Skid Marks?

Christopher Dibke et al.

Summary: This study is the first large-scale survey of microplastics in the German Bight, revealing spatial, temporal, and potential source variations of microplastics in marine environments. The main source of microplastics is hypothesized to be marine (antifouling) coating particles from ships, rather than common packaging waste.

A novel thermoanalytical method for quantifying microplastics in marine sediments

Jia Lin et al.

Summary: A novel thermoanalytical method for quantifying microplastics by measuring the contents of microplastic-derived carbon has been proposed in this study, which effectively eliminates the limitation of particle appearances. Case study demonstrates the high reliability and practicability of this method in quantifying microplastics.

Paraffin and other petroleum waxes in the southern North Sea

Claudia Lorenz et al.

Summary: This study examined the occurrence of petroleum waxes in marine surface water in the North Sea, particularly focusing on persistent floaters of small size (<5 mm). Using ATR-FTIR and gas chromatography, the study detected paraffin particles in samples and provided details on their chemical composition. The study highlights the importance of harmonized detection methods for PW pollution and emphasizes the need for consistent monitoring systems in conjunction with microplastics monitoring.
