A critical review on various remediation approaches for heavy metal contaminants removal from contaminated soils

Saravanan Rajendran et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution is a global environmental challenge that poses a significant threat to human life. Various methods have been explored to eliminate heavy metal pollutants from the environment, but are constrained by high expenses, processing duration, geological problems, and political issues. The immobilization of metals, phytoextraction, and biological methods have proven practical in treating metal contaminants from the soil.

Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil by combined chemical reduction and microbial stabilization: The role of biogas solid residue (BSR)

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined approach of chemical reduction and microbial stabilization was investigated for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The combination of ferrous sulfate and biogas solid residue effectively converted Cr(VI) into Cr(III), reducing the residual Cr(VI) content to a level well below the screening value for soil contamination. The treatment also eliminated the phytotoxicity of the soil and caused significant changes in the microbial community.

Performance and mechanisms of microwave-assisted zerovalent iron/pyrite for advance remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil

Qi Li et al.

Summary: A novel approach combining microwave irradiation with zerovalent iron/pyrite (FeS2/ZVI) was developed for the efficient remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The results showed that microwave irradiation-assisted FeS2/ZVI achieved rapid and efficient removal of Cr(VI) from the soil, with a 99.9% removal rate within 10 minutes, and a decrease in Cr(VI) concentration from 3900.8 to 2.38 mg kg(-1). The study also demonstrated that microwave irradiation promoted the transformation of reduced Cr(III) into stable FeCr2O4 mineral, and the remediated soil exhibited excellent long-term stability.

The current approach to soil remediation: A review of physicochemical and biological technologies, and the potential of their strategic combination

Juan Daniel Aparicio et al.

Summary: In the past few decades, soil pollution caused by industrial activities, urbanization, high consumption rates, and unsafe human practices has become a significant issue. Various physicochemical and biological remediation technologies have been developed to address this problem. Physicochemical treatments offer high speed and efficiency but are expensive, labor-intensive, and damaging to soil functionality. In contrast, biological treatments are eco-friendly and socially accepted but require longer periods to remove pollutants from soil. However, by combining different treatments, the limitations related to pollutant type and concentration, soil characteristics, accessibility, and cost can be overcome. Successful cases combining physicochemical and biological technologies have demonstrated improved efficiency in pollutant degradation. This review aims to provide information for decision-making on the most appropriate technology for specific situations, optimizing resources and time. Nevertheless, further studies and practical applications are needed to explore the potential of combining strategies for the restoration of contaminated environments.
