Particle size-dependent behavior of redox-active biochar to promote anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)

Jiajia Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that adding corn stover-derived biochars with different particle sizes (SP, MP, LP) can significantly improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of anammox reactors and reduce the concentration of NO3- in the effluent. The particle size of biochar affects its ability to enhance EPS electron transport, with SP biochar outperforming LP biochar in promoting the growth of anammox bacteria.

Highly efficient and synchronous nitrogen removal from ammonia-rich wastewater and domestic wastewater via a novel anammox coupled with double-nitrite-shunt process at low temperature

Xiangchen Li et al.

Summary: Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a widely accepted energy-efficient method for nitrogen removal from high-strength sidestreams. This study demonstrated highly efficient and synchronous nitrogen removal by coupling anammox with a double-nitrite-shunt process, achieving TN removal efficiency of up to 98.4% even at low temperatures. The integration of partial denitrification with anammox offered an efficient solution to address the challenge of excessive NO3--N residue, showcasing significant savings in energy and organic carbon compared to conventional methods.

Unraveling the capability of graphene nanosheets and γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles to stimulate anammox granular sludge

Ahmed Elreedy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of nanomaterials, specifically graphene nanosheets and gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, in enhancing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process. Results showed that graphene nanosheets improved nitrogen removal rate and enzyme activity, while gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles increased nitrogen removal rate but had no effect on enzyme activity. The use of nanomaterials also influenced the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microbial enrichment in the anammox process.

Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.
