The spatial impact of rural economic change on river water quality

Cathal O'Donoghue et al.

Summary: This paper uses Ireland as a case study to investigate the relationship between rural economic activities and river water quality. Findings suggest that factors such as forestry level, industrial activity, intensity and type of agriculture, and wastewater treatment type in an area all play critical roles in influencing water quality. The study shows an improvement in the relationship between agriculture and water quality over time, particularly during periods with legislative measures and financial support aimed at improving water quality.
