Benthic species as mud patrol - modelled effects of bioturbators and biofilms on large-scale estuarine mud and morphology

Muriel Z. M. Bruckner et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microphytobenthos and macrozoobenthos on the erodibility of muddy sediments using an eco-morphodynamic model, revealing that bioturbation and biostabilization have different impacts on sediment erosion and export. Eco-engineering affects habitat conditions and species interactions determine species dominance.

Modelling spatial and temporal patterns in bioturbator effects on sediment resuspension: A biophysical metabolic approach

Francesco Cozzoli et al.

Summary: Tidal flats are biogeomorphic landscapes shaped by physical forces and interactions with benthic biota. A metabolic approach was used to assess the effect of the benthic bivalve common cockle on sediment resuspension, showing a positive relationship, especially in cohesive sediments. Clear spatial and seasonal patterns were predicted in the relative importance of the cockle's contribution to sediment resuspension along a tidal transect, with the highest influence expected at intermediate elevation of a mudflat and in the warm season.

Key Bioturbator Species Within Benthic Communities Determine Sediment Resuspension Thresholds

Jaco C. de Smit et al.

Summary: Research has shown that individual macrobenthic species have varying effects on sediment erodibility, with smaller bioturbator densities having a larger impact than higher densities. Total metabolic rate may not be a reliable indicator for comparing effects between highly contrasting species. In benthic communities, the species with the largest individual effect in reducing tau(cr) plays a key role in determining the community's ability to reduce sediment resuspension.

Origin and evolution of tidal depressions in a tidal flat and their role in carbon sequestration in the Bahia Blanca Estuary (Argentina)

M. Antonela Toniolo et al.

Summary: The activity of Neohelice granulata crabs is associated with the origin of tidal depressions in siliciclastic tidal flats. Their burrowing behavior alters sediment properties, leading to the formation of tidal depressions. These depressions can act as important organic carbon sinks due to the organic matter fixation under suitable conditions.
