Riparian vegetation as a trap for plastic litter

Giulia Cesarini et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to aquatic habitats worldwide, especially riparian zones. Research shows that riparian vegetation plays a crucial role in trapping plastic litter, with shrubby vegetation having the highest plastic density.

Rivers as Plastic Reservoirs

Tim van Emmerik et al.

Summary: Rivers serve as important reservoirs for plastic pollution, with only a small fraction of plastics being emitted into the ocean. Under extreme hydrological conditions, the accumulated plastics in different river compartments are emptied, influencing their fate.

Plastic in global rivers: are floods making it worse?

Caspar T. J. Roebroek et al.

Summary: Research shows that riverine plastic pollution significantly increases under flood conditions, even reaching several orders of magnitude higher; flood defences can effectively reduce plastic mobilisation, but regions vulnerable to flooding often have high plastic mobilisation potential; comprehensive measures are needed for clean-up, mitigation, and flood risk management.

The life of a plastic butter tub in riverine environments*

Astrid E. Delorme et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution in the world's oceans poses a major environmental challenge, with rivers recognized as a key source of land-based plastic waste entering the seas. This study introduces a novel concept of tracking the aging process of plastic waste in river systems to better understand sources, hot-spots, and degradation processes of plastic pollution. The research shows that the degree of aging of plastic waste in rivers is influenced by proximity to the main river channel, exposure to natural conditions, and storage time on land.

What remains today of pre-industrial Alpine rivers? Census of historical and current channel patterns in the Alps

Severin Hohensinner et al.

Summary: This study examines the historical river patterns in the European Alps, revealing the widespread presence of multi-channel river reaches throughout the region, while sinuous and meandering channels are comparatively rare. The morphology of river channels is influenced by factors such as slope, floodplain width, and distance from the source. Different countries in the region have implemented varying channelization measures, with human activities directly impacting the morphology of rivers and sediment supply.

Dangerous traps: Macroplastic encounters affecting freshwater and terrestrial wildlife

Martin C. M. Blettler et al.

Summary: Encounters between plastic debris and wildlife can be harmful, with ingestion, entanglement, and plastic usage being common in marine species. This study documented and analyzed 90 different cases of macroplastic-fauna encounters in freshwater and terrestrial species through citizen science. Birds were the most frequently reported taxon in encounters, with plastic usage as nesting material and entanglement being the dominant types. Both lethal consequences and potential benefits for invasive species were observed, highlighting the need for global awareness and lists of non-marine species impacted by plastic encounters.

Macroplastic Debris Transfer in Rivers: A Travel Distance Approach

Robert A. Newbould et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new probabilistic model of plastic transport in rivers, describing the main processes controlling plastic displacement and predicting the statistical distribution of travel distances for individual items of buoyant macroplastic debris. The model showed promising results in describing observed travel distance distributions and has the potential to improve estimates of river plastic flux by using a stochastic travel distance approach for longer reaches. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps regarding the rate and location of plastic supply to river systems, transport behaviors of different types of plastic debris, and trap effectiveness in different types of river systems, seasons, and discharge levels.

Macroplastics in rivers: present knowledge, issues and challenges

Hadeel Al-Zawaidah et al.

Summary: Macroplastics are the primary contributor to riverine plastic pollution, posing serious threats to river systems and livelihoods. Research on riverine macroplastics and their effects has not received sufficient attention. Future research should focus on improving field quantification techniques, global data sharing, and laboratory experiments to establish a riverine macroplastic budget model.
