Compromising situation of India's bio-medical waste incineration units during pandemic outbreak of COVID-19: Associated environmental-health impacts and mitigation measures

Parteek Singh Thind et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to the BMW management system worldwide, with a surge in yellow category BMW generation due to an increase in COVID-infected patients in India. The study revealed that each COVID-infected patient in India generates approximately 3.41 kg/d of BMW, with 50.44% of it being yellow BMW. Furthermore, the incineration of BMW during the pandemic emitted pollutants in the order of NOx > CO > SOx > PM > HCl > Cd > Pb > Hg > PCBs > Ni > Cr > Be > As, with Cd posing a potential carcinogenic risk to the population.
