National-scale distribution of micro(meso)plastics in farmland soils across China: Implications for environmental impacts

Jiani Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of micro(meso)plastics (MMPs) in the soil of 30 farmlands across China, finding varying abundance of MPs across different regions, with polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyester being major components. Exposure to MPs was found to impact soil properties and crop growth, with minimum effective concentrations (MEC) ranging from 0.0040-10%. The actual abundance of MPs in national-scale soils was lower than MEC, indicating potential environmental impacts.

Occurrence, stability and source identification of small size microplastics in the Jiayan reservoir, China

Jinqiong Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination of microplastics in a reservoir in western China, revealing high concentrations of MPs in both surface water and sediment, with small-sized polyethylene fragments being the main contributor. The sources of MPs in the reservoir were found to be agricultural activities and atmospheric deposition. The study highlights the importance of studying the fate of small-sized microplastics in reservoirs for better understanding and management of microplastic pollution.

Effects of microplastics and drought on soil ecosystem functions and multifunctionality

Yudi M. Lozano et al.

Summary: The interaction between microplastic fibres and drought can affect ecosystem functions and multifunctionality. Drought negatively impacts nutrient cycling by decreasing enzymatic activities, while microplastics increase soil aggregation, pH, and nutrient retention. The effects of microplastics on soil functions depend on soil water status, with differing impacts under well-watered conditions versus drought.

Projecting the sorption capacity of heavy metal ions onto microplastics in global aquatic environments using artificial neural networks

Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: This paper established artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the sorption capacity of heavy metal ions onto microplastics in global aquatic environments. The predicted sorption capacity was influenced by the initial concentration of heavy metal ions and the salinity in surrounding water. Aged microplastics had higher affinity to heavy metal ions than virgin microplastics, with larger microplastics showing less sorption of Cd, Pb, and Zn ions. The laboratory studies were found to provide useful information for projecting the sorption capacity of heavy metal ions onto microplastics in global aquatic environments.

Summary: The study found that the presence of microplastics inhibits the removal capacity of nZVI for Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn metals in groundwater, with different desorption rates observed for different metal ions. Among the various microplastics investigated, PVC had the most adverse impact on metal desorption by promoting nZVI aging through electrostatic attraction.

Vertical migration of microplastics in porous media: Multiple controlling factors under wet-dry cycling

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the vertical transport of Microplastics (MPs) in porous sand media, finding a strong positive correlation between surface hydrophobicity and MP mobility. Factors such as MP particle size, sand diameter, wet-dry cycles, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were found to influence the migration behavior of MPs in sand. Frequent wet-dry cycles and the presence of DOM were observed to promote the vertical migration of MPs in the sand.

Transport and fate of microplastics from riverine sediment dredge piles: Implications for disposal

Xiaoliang Ji et al.

Summary: This study found that dredged sediments contain high concentrations of microplastics, which may potentially remobilize into the environment during the handling process. The dredged sediments stored in farmlands can disperse microplastics to surrounding soils and surface waters, with higher concentrations observed in dry and wet seasons due to wind dispersion and rainfall/runoff erosion, respectively.

Soil erosion as transport pathway of microplastic from agriculture soils to aquatic ecosystems

Raphael Rehm et al.

Summary: This study focused on the erosion and transport processes of microplastics (MP) from agricultural topsoils during heavy rainfall events. The experiments revealed a preferential transport of MP with increasing interaction with mineral soil particles or aggregates leading to a more conservative transport behavior over time. The findings suggest that arable land prone to soil erosion can be a significant source of MP for aquatic ecosystems.
