Influence of slow sand filter cleaning process type on filter media biomass: backwashing versus scraping

F. H. de Souza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of backwashing on biomass in slow sand filters, finding that backwashing preserved more biomass and did not significantly disturb its structure compared to scraping. Additionally, filtered water quality was acceptable in backwashed filters, and headloss developed faster in scraped filters. The results suggest that backwashing can preserve more biomass and may lead to faster filter ripening in slow sand filtration systems.

Bacterial diversity in petroleum coke based biofilters treating oil sands process water

Muhammad Arslan et al.

Summary: The study found that delayed petroleum-coke (PC) in fixed bed biofilters can be used to degrade naphthenic acids (NAs) and aromatics in oil sands process water (OSPW), effectively removing some NAs and aromatics, but the removal of oxidized NAs species was poor.

Salt selected for hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria and enhanced hydrocarbon biodegradation in slurry bioreactors

Ali Akbari et al.

Summary: Hydrocarbon and salt contamination often co-occur from oil production activities. Salt is considered a potential inhibitor of microbial activity, but hydrocarbon biodegradation can be enhanced under saline conditions. The microbial community may adapt and certain bacterial populations may increase in abundance in response to salinity, while overall population size decreases.
