Comparative cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment of bio-based and petrochemical PET bottles

Iris Vural Gursel et al.

Summary: This study presented a life cycle assessment of bio-based PET bottles and compared them with petrochemical PET bottles for environmental impact. Baseline bio-based PET bottles performed poorly, and using European crops for ethanol production resulted in worse environmental performance.

Estimating induced land use change emissions for sustainable aviation biofuel pathways

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study estimated ILUC emission intensities for 17 SAF pathways, finding that vegetable oil pathways tend to have higher emissions while cellulosic pathways provide negative ILUC emissions. Most of the assessed pathways have lower full life-cycle emission intensities than petroleum-based jet fuels, offering promising options to reduce aviation emissions.

From agricultural (by-)products to jet fuels: Carbon footprint and economic performance

Christian Moretti et al.

Summary: The study concludes that centralized large-scale fermentation is more cost-effective and has lower emissions for bio-jet fuel production. The carbon performance and cost of this novel bio-jet fuel could be similar to other alcohol-to-jet fuels once commercialized. Depending on the feedstock and configuration, the GHG emission mitigation potential of this novel jet fuel was estimated between 41% and 52%.

Attributional & Consequential Life Cycle Assessment: Definitions, Conceptual Characteristics and Modelling Restrictions

Thomas Schaubroeck et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a common method to assess the potential environmental impact of human/industrial systems, with attributional (ALCA) and consequential (CLCA) being two prominent types. This article aims to argue for and select definitions for each concept, specify their characteristics, and go beyond current findings. ALCA attributes environmental impact to a product life cycle, while CLCA assesses the consequences of decisions, with different modelling restrictions and evaluation approaches for each type.
