Effect of the rapid increase of salinity on anoxic-oxic biofilm reactor for treatment of high-salt and high-ammonia-nitrogen wastewater

Bixiao Ji et al.

Summary: A novel anoxic/oxic biofilm process was developed to remove ammonia from washing wastewater from power plants. Rapid strategies were found to excel at ammonia removal under high salinity conditions after reducing organic load, while excessive organics inhibited nitrification capacity of the biofilm. Control of organic load may prevent the sulfur cycle.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge using dynamic membrane at varying substrate concentration reveals new insight towards methanogenic pathway and biofilm formation

Roent Dune A. Cayetano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the benefits of biomass retention through dynamic membrane (DM) for stable performance of AnDMBR treating waste activated sludge, with an observed shift in archaeal population and functional gene expression at higher substrate concentrations. The presence of glycosyltransferase encoding genes in the biofilm formation process and the increase in average particle size distribution suggests the potential for high-rate treatment of waste activated sludge using an AnDMBR system.

Response of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge to residual ferric ions

Zhang-Wei He et al.

Summary: The study found that residual ferric ions had significant effects on the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge, with different concentrations of FI leading to varying impacts on methane production and short chain fatty acids accumulation. Low FI levels enhanced methane production, while high FI levels inhibited acidogenesis and methanogenesis.

Evaluation of the production of biohydrogen during the co-digestion of organic wastes in an upflow hybrid anaerobic reactor

L. M. Reyna-Gomez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different hydraulic retention times on the co-digestion of organic residues using a novel reactor, revealing that a HRT of 24 hours resulted in the highest concentration of metabolites. Additionally, the presence of specific genera such as Megasphaera, Clostridium, Lactobacillus, and Prevotella was found to contribute to biohydrogen selectivity and reactor performance.

Enhancing methane production of synthetic brewery water with granular activated carbon modified with nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) in anaerobic system

Muchen Sun et al.

Summary: The research found that adding granular activated carbon and nanoscale zero-valent iron composite particles can enhance the degradation rate of COD and methane production in anaerobic biological treatment processes. The composite particles exhibited excellent electrical conductivity, promoting microbial metabolism, which accelerated substrate utilization and methane generation.

Zero valent iron improved methane production and specifically reduced aminoglycoside and tetracycline resistance genes in anaerobic digestion

Junya Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that using zero valent iron (ZVI) can simultaneously improve methane production and reduce antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). ZVI specifically facilitated the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes, possibly through inhibiting enzyme activity and intracellular ionic disturbance.
