Optimizing light sources for selective growth of purple bacteria and efficient formation of value-added products

Siwei Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different light sources on the production of biomass, pigments, and protein by Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a strain of purple non-sulfur bacteria. Results showed that incandescent lamp performed best in the lab scale, with infrared light and incandescent lamp being beneficial to pigment and protein production, respectively.

Purple phototrophic bacteria are outcompeted by aerobic heterotrophs in the presence of oxygen

Gabriel Capson-Tojo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on the performance of enriched purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) cultures in treating wastewater. The results showed that the presence of oxygen suppressed photoheterotrophic growth of PPB and led to dominant chemoheterotrophy under aerobic conditions. This suggests that PPB cannot outcompete other microbes under aerobic or microaerobic conditions, despite their aerobic capabilities.

Operational Strategies to Selectively Produce Purple Bacteria for Microbial Protein in Raceway Reactors

Abbas Alloul et al.

Summary: The study developed operational strategies to boost PNSB abundance in the biomass of a raceway reactor fed with volatile fatty acids. Matching the COD loading rate to the removal rate during the light period prevented substrate availability during the dark period and increased PNSB abundance. The best performance was achieved at the highest surface-to-volume ratio, showing high productivities and PNSB abundance.

LED alternating between blue and red-orange light improved the biomass and lipid productivity of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Xiangpeng Li et al.

Summary: Alternating blue and red-orange light significantly improves algal growth kinetics and lipid production, increasing biomass concentration and productivity. The growth kinetics and nutrient composition are significantly influenced by the first illumination light and illumination time, with protein content depending on the illumination sequence.

Highly transparent plasticized PVC composite film with ideal ultraviolet/high-energy short-wavelength blue light shielding

Keshun Su et al.

Summary: A highly transparent film with ideal UV/HEB shielding was designed by adding UV absorbers and transparent yellow pigments to improve the UV/HEB shielding performance of PVC. It was demonstrated that UV326 UV absorber and 0.5 phr transparent yellow pigment could achieve more than 99% shielding effect in both UV and HEB regions, making the composite film suitable for various applications.

Analysis of the Involvement of the Isoleucine Biosynthesis Pathway in Photoheterotrophic Metabolism of Rhodospirillum rubrum

Guillaume Bayon-Vicente et al.

Summary: Purple non-sulfur bacteria are versatile bacteria capable of assimilating a wide range of carbon sources, generating excess reduced electron carriers under photoheterotrophic conditions. Apart from known electron sinks like the Calvin cycle and H-2 production, the role of pathways such as polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis in redox balance is still under debate. Isoleucine biosynthesis in Rhodospirillum rubrum may play a key role in redox homeostasis under light stress.
