A review: Research progress on microplastic pollutants in aquatic environments

Yuanqiang Tang et al.

Summary: The widespread issue of microplastics in water has attracted global attention for its potential harm to aquatic organisms and humans. Microplastics act as carriers for heavy metals and other pollutants, amplifying their effects through the food chain. Research and regulations are needed to reduce the impact of microplastics on the environment and human health.

Aging assessment of microplastics (LDPE, PET and uPVC) under urban environment stressors

Mariana N. Miranda et al.

Summary: The study reported changes in the chemical structure, surface morphology, and crystallinity of three different polymers in microplastic form after being exposed to different aging agents. The results suggest that microplastics undergo aging in the environment, which may affect their behavior and intensify their impacts.

Summary: Current plastic modeling using synthetic polymer beads as surrogates for real environmental plastics reveals inherent differences in physicochemical properties, affecting behaviors in fate, transport, and toxicity assessments. To enhance realism, future research areas should focus on combining mechanical, photochemical, and thermal degradation processes to simulate real-world weathering for improved environmental MP risk assessment.

Conditioning Film and Early Biofilm Succession on Plastic Surfaces

Christoph D. Rummel et al.

Summary: In the context of environmental plastic pollution, the emergence of plastisphere, a plastic-specific microbial community, is still under debate. The adsorption of dissolved organic matter to different polymer substrates is substrate-dependent, with UV-weathered polymers showing a preference for hydrophilic organic matter. The initial microbial colonization process shows substrate specificity for biofilm attachment, with communities ultimately converging after incubation.

Plastics in the Earth system

Aron Stubbins et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become a global issue, prompting us to consider plastics as emergent geomaterials never before seen in Earth's history. With high carbon content, plastics can rival natural organic carbon in some ecosystems, prompting geochemists to include plastics in their analyses to expedite understanding of plastics in the Earth system. Furthermore, plastics can serve as global-scale tracers to advance Earth system science.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.

Understanding the Fundamental Basis for Biofilm Formation on Plastic Surfaces: Role of Conditioning Films

Geetika Bhagwat et al.

Summary: The study found that marine conditioning of PET and PLA samples for 24 hours resulted in an increase of approximately 11% and 31% in average surface roughness, with coccoid-shaped bacterial cells attaching to the surfaces and accumulation of salt precipitates revealed through EDS analysis. The increase in surface roughness due to conditioning is linked to a material's hydrophilicity, leading to easier attachment of bacteria on the surfaces. Further research on CFs could provide important insights into the interaction between plastics and microbes with implications for medical, industrial, and environmental research.
