Secondary organic aerosols produced from photochemical oxidation of secondarily evaporated biomass burning organic gases: Chemical composition, toxicity, optical properties, and climate effect

Zheng Fang et al.

Summary: Biomass burning is a significant source of primary organic aerosols (POA), which contain semivolatile organic compounds that can form secondary evaporated BB organic gases (SBB-OGs) during transport. These SBB-OGs contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA), with carbonyl compounds being the most abundant species. The oxidative potential of SOA was characterized with the DTT assay, and it was found to have a cooling effect when pure airborne SOA are present in atmospherically relevant sizes.

Summary: This study provides molecular insights into the light absorption properties of biomass burning brown carbon, revealing different chromophores in BrC samples. The results suggest that gas-phase partitioning influences the optical properties of BrC, leading to an increase in the mass absorption coefficient of aerosolized PO.

Apportionment of black and brown carbon spectral absorption sources in the urban environment of Athens, Greece, during winter

D. G. Kaskaoutis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spectral properties and source characteristics of absorbing aerosols in the urban background of Athens, revealing significant differences in the contribution of various components to total absorption between day and night. BrC and biomass burning aerosols showed higher contributions at shorter wavelengths, while different behaviors were observed for BCff, BrCff, BCbb, BrCbb, and BrCsec components. Sensitivity analysis supported the reliability of the results, which could have important implications for radiative transfer models.

Aging of Atmospheric Brown Carbon Aerosol

Rachel F. Hems et al.

Summary: Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosol is emitted by numerous primary sources and formed by secondary sources, being chemically complex. As BrC aerosol ages through various chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere, its chemical composition and optical properties change significantly, impacting climate. Research in the past decade has expanded our understanding of BrC reactions in both gas and condensed phases, with a focus on gas phase reactions leading to BrC formation, aqueous and in-cloud processes, and aerosol particle reactions.
