Landscape controls on riverine export of dissolved organic carbon from Great Britain

Jennifer L. Williamson et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive assessment of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export in Great Britain, revealing that smaller river systems draining peat-rich areas are underestimated in global syntheses. The study also highlights the significant influence of upland conifer plantation forestry on the spatial distribution of DOC exports. These findings have implications for future assessments of CO2 sequestration potential and climate change mitigation strategies.

Leaching of dissolved organic carbon from mineral soils plays a significant role in the terrestrial carbon balance

Mahdi Nakhavali et al.

Summary: The leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from soils to river networks is a significant but overlooked component of the terrestrial carbon budget, contributing to about 15% of the terrestrial Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) globally. Through modeling, a global terrestrial DOC leaching flux of 0.28 Gt C year(-1) was estimated, with regions like the tropical rainforest exporting as much as 22% of their terrestrial NEP as leached DOC. Despite boreal regions having the highest relative increase (28%) in DOC leaching inputs to river networks, the tropics showed the lowest relative increase (9%) over the historical period from 1860 to 2010.

Optical properties and 14C ages of stream DOM from agricultural and forest watersheds during storms

Seung-Cheol Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that forest and agricultural land use impact the concentration and composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in stream during storm events; agricultural streams have lower peak DOC values than forest streams, indicating weaker response to hydrological changes; agricultural watersheds export more protein-like DOM compared to forested streams.

Concentration and biodegradability of dissolved organic carbon derived from soils: A global perspective

Futing Liu et al.

Summary: The study synthesized dataset from 39 literatures worldwide, analyzing the variability of soil-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in different environments. Mean annual precipitation was found to be the dominant control factor for DOC concentration variability. Biodegradability of DOC in pore water was significantly lower than that in soil leachates, with specific UV absorbance being the primary indicator for spatial variation. These results highlight the crucial role of soil-derived DOC in global carbon cycling under climate change.

The unexplored role of preferential flow in soil carbon dynamics

Shane M. Franklin et al.

Summary: Water controls the fate of soil organics, with preferential flow pathways impacting microbial activity and carbon cycling through repeated wetting and biogeochemical reactivation. Understanding the interconnected networks of hydraulically active pores within the soil profile is crucial for mechanistic representation of soil functions.

Long term simulations of macronutrients (C, N and P) in UK freshwaters

V. A. Bell et al.

Summary: The research investigates the impact of landscape changes in industrialized nations over the past two centuries on UK freshwater and marine nutrient fluxes. Model reconstructions show that the rapid increase in agricultural fertilizers and population growth led to a significant rise in nitrogen and phosphorous fluxes to rivers.
