Microplastic pollution in sublittoral coastal sediments of a North Atlantic island: The case of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain)

Cristina Villanova-Solano et al.

Summary: The study found that sediment samples near La Palma island mainly contained microfibers, predominantly white/colorless and blue in color, with an average length of around 2423 mm and an average concentration of 2682 items per kg of dry weight, predominantly cellulose-based. While no significant differences were found in sediment depths, significant variations were observed between sampling sites on the east and west of the island.

Impact of weathering on the chemical identi fi cation of microplastics from usual packaging polymers in the marine environment

V Fernandez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Plastics disposed into the environment undergo degradation through various agents, making it crucial to correctly identify and quantify them in environmental monitoring. Different types of polymers exhibit distinct degradation pathways and products during aging, requiring individual study. Including spectra of weathered polymers in spectral libraries for reliable identifications in microplastics pollution studies is critical.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of a municipal WWTP in removing microplastics using different sampling and detection methods. Results showed that the majority of microplastics were removed by the secondary treatment stage, and seasonal variations can affect the concentration of microplastics in effluents.

Microplastic-adsorbed organic contaminants: Analytical methods and occurrence

Gabriel Jimenez-Skrzypek et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution, especially the presence of microplastics, is a major concern in environmental pollution. The wide distribution and constant accumulation of microplastics have led to their classification as contaminants. Analytical methods for organic contaminants in microplastics are complex and challenging due to the variability in composition, sizes, and shapes of microplastics.

Assessment of six soil ecosystem services by coupling simulation modelling and field measurement of soil properties

Yosra Ellili-Bargaoui et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate six soil ecosystem services (SES) using a set of indicators derived from dynamic soil and crop modelling. The results revealed that soil variability plays a crucial role in providing SES, particularly for groundwater recharge, plant biomass provision, plant water provision, and carbon sequestration. These findings highlight the importance of soil properties in influencing the provision of ecosystem services.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of microplastics and microfiber contamination in effluents of the City of Saskatoon wastewater treatment plant

Saurabh Prajapati et al.

Summary: In this study, microplastic and microfiber contamination in the effluents of a wastewater treatment plant in Saskatoon, Canada was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized. Fibers accounted for the majority of synthetic microparticles, with stable concentrations across seasons. Despite relatively low concentrations per liter of effluent, the large daily discharge volume results in significant emissions of particles into the river. Environmental implications of these findings require further investigation, but they represent an important initial step in understanding microplastic contamination in the Canadian Prairies.

Microplastics in agricultural soils, wastewater effluents and sewage sludge in Mauritius

Doorgha Ragoobur et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of microplastics in agricultural soils, wastewater effluents, and sewage sludge in Mauritius, revealing high concentrations of microplastics in these samples. Polypropylene was found to be the predominant type of microplastics present, mainly in the form of fibers, fragments, and flakes, with high abundance in both agricultural soil samples and wastewater treatment plants.

Occurrence and removal of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water purification facilities: A review

Yan Laam Cheng et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are significant sources of microplastics, with high concentrations in influent but relatively high removal efficiencies. Disinfection shows potential for breaking down microplastics, while the role of drinking water purification facilities in microplastic removal remains inadequately understood.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.
