Semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of secondary sludge with free ammonia pretreatment: Focusing on volatile solids destruction, dewaterability, pathogen removal and its implications

Summary: This study demonstrated that pretreatment of secondary sludge with free ammonia enhanced volatile solids destruction and methane production in semi-continuous anaerobic digestion systems. The FA pretreatment also improved sludge dewaterability and pathogen removal efficiency, while reducing the volume of dewatered sludge and overall cost. These findings suggest a promising strategy to enhance sludge reduction in anaerobic digestion processes.

Summary: The study demonstrates that n-DAMO archaea can link the anaerobic oxidation of methane to DNRA, facilitating nitrate reduction. This process occurs in biofilms in a membrane biofilm reactor, promoting the global nitrogen cycle. The localized nitrite gradients produced by n-DAMO archaea stimulate Anammox bacteria to consume nitrite, aiding n-DAMO archaea in resisting nitrite stress.
