Identification and visualisation of microplastics via PCA to decode Raman spectrum matrix towards imaging

Cheng Fang et al.

Summary: This study compares two decoding approaches for visualising microplastics and nanoplastics via Raman imaging. The first approach maps Raman intensity at characteristic peaks when standard spectra are available, while the second approach uses PCA to decode the spectrum matrix for complex samples without standard spectra. The PCA-based algorithm shows advantages in analysing and identifying microplastics from other materials.

Dishwashing sponges and brushes: Consumer practices and bacterial growth and survival

Trond Moretro et al.

Summary: Sponges and brushes used in kitchens were examined in terms of bacteria growth and survival, with sponges being the preferred hand-cleaning utensils in most countries. Consumers tend to change sponges regularly based on sensory cues and usage occurrences. Brushes were found to be more hygienic than sponges and treatments such as chlorine, boiling, or dishwasher were effective in reducing pathogens.

Worldwide actions against plastic pollution from microbeads and microplastics in cosmetics focusing on European policies. Has the issue been handled effectively?

Lamprini Anagnosti et al.

Summary: Microbeads, solid primary microplastics < 5 mm in diameter added to cosmetic products, can escape into waters and have potential impacts on the environment and human health. Despite scientists suggesting banning them, few countries have taken legislative steps, partly due to the belief that cosmetic industries have responded to the call for a phase-out.

Correlative SEM-Raman microscopy to reveal nanoplastics in complex environments

Ruth Schmidt et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the analysis of NPs within the 100 nm range in challenging environments, using a correlative approach between scanning electron microscopy and Raman microscopy. Promising detection limits were found, with practical tests revealing limitations in reliable identification of unknown NPs. Combining this approach with advanced sample preparation techniques could yield a powerful tool for NPs analysis in various environments.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Identification and visualisation of microplastics / nanoplastics by Raman imaging (iii): algorithm to cross-check multi-images

Cheng Fang et al.

Summary: The study developed an algorithm to merge multiple Raman images in order to enhance mapping accuracy for the identification of microplastics/nanoplastics, with validation conducted on microplastics/nanoplastics potentially generated by laser printers in offices or homes. This approach improves the certainty of mapping and identification in complex samples containing various materials with overlapping Raman signals.
