Gut microbiome-immune system interaction in reptiles

Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome of reptiles, along with their robust immune system, may contribute to their longevity and overall hardiness. Current research focuses on the composition of the reptilian gut microbiome, the interaction between the immune system and gut microbiome, antimicrobial peptides, reptilian resistance to infectious diseases and cancer. Preliminary studies have shown that reptiles possess gut flora with anticancer and antibacterial properties, as well as produce novel gut bacterial metabolites and antimicrobial peptides. Understanding the mechanisms between the gut microbiome and immune system may lead to the development of new therapies.

Bioaccumulation and metabolic response of PFAS mixtures in wild-caught freshwater turtles (Emydura macquarii macquarii) using omics-based ecosurveillance techniques

David J. Beale et al.

Summary: This study utilized an omics-based ecosurveillance approach to investigate the impacts of PFAS pollution on freshwater turtles, revealing significantly higher concentrations of PFAS in the serum of impacted turtles with negative biochemical impacts. Further research on a larger turtle cohort is needed to establish adverse outcome pathways and improve risk assessment for populations exposed to PFAS mixtures.

Impact of Contaminants on Microbiota: Linking the Gut-Brain Axis with Neurotoxicity

Jordina Balaguer-Trias et al.

Summary: In recent years, research has focused on the microbiota to establish a connection between neuronal health and intestinal imbalance. The microbiota is considered a critical regulator of the gut-brain axis, explained through neural, endocrine, and immune pathways. Daily exposure to contaminants affects the microbiota and disrupts the communication between the gut and brain, leading to neuronal disorders. The interplay between xenobiotics, microbiota, and neurotoxicity, especially in susceptible populations, remains poorly explored. Emerging in-silico models show promise in understanding this axis and preventing neurotoxicity.

Non-targeted metabolomics and associations with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in humans: A scoping review

Pengfei Guo et al.

Summary: Non-targeted metabolomics has been widely used to assess metabolite and metabolic pathway alterations associated with PFAS exposure. The findings from 11 human studies suggest that PFAS are associated with changes in tryptophan metabolism, urea cycle, and lipid metabolism. Standardizing research methods and reporting is recommended for further studies.

Environmental pollutant exposure associated with altered early-life gut microbiome: Results from a birth cohort study

Nathalia F. Naspolini et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal exposure to environmental pollutants can impact the development of a newborn's gut microbiome, with cesarean-section babies and preterm babies being more vulnerable. Breastfeeding may play a significant role as a source of pollutant exposure. The timing of fetal exposure, either intrauterine or perinatal, seems to matter, while specific microbiota clusters consistently affected by all pollutants have been identified.

Bioaccumulation and impact of maternal PFAS offloading on egg biochemistry from wild-caught freshwater turtles (Emydura macquarii macquarii)

David J. Beale et al.

Summary: This study reveals the maternal offloading of PFAS in short-necked turtles exposed to high concentrations of PFAS during the egg-laying process, and analyzes the biological impact of PFAS on the ovaries. The results show that PFAS can be transferred from the mother to the ovaries, resulting in higher concentrations of PFAS in the ovaries. In addition, the impact of PFAS on the ovaries is also manifested in changes in metabolites in the ovaries, as well as a decrease in lipid content and quality in the yolks, and a decrease in calcium content and weakened physical structure in the eggshells.

Perfluorooctanoic acid-induced liver injury is potentially associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that both subacute and subchronic exposure to PFOA can induce liver inflammation, disrupt antioxidative homeostasis, and cause liver histological abnormalities, possibly related to gut microbiota dysbiosis. Additionally, exposure to PFOA affects the functional capabilities of microbial communities and reduces levels of short-chain fatty acids, which may contribute to liver damage.

The intestinal neuro-immune axis: crosstalk between neurons, immune cells, and microbes

Amanda Jacobson et al.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract is regulated by a dense network of interconnected neurons that coordinate important physiological functions. Studies have shown complex interactions between gut neurons, immune cells, and epithelial cells, highlighting their roles in immune regulation and intestinal function. Integration of intestinal microbiota into the neuro-immune axis through tuning neuronal and immune interactions may offer new therapeutic targets for inflammatory diseases.

Sea turtles across the North Pacific are exposed to perfluoroalkyl substances

Cathryn Wood et al.

Summary: PFASs concentrations were assessed in green and hawksbill turtles from North Pacific, and it was found that hawksbill turtles had higher levels than green turtles, related to trophic differences. For green turtles, PFOS concentrations were related to human populations, and there was no evident influence on fibropapillomatosis. Maternal transfer of PFASs to hawksbill eggs was observed, with decreasing concentrations with distance from airports and with clutch order.
