Spatial Distribution of Microplastics in Surficial Benthic Sediment of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie

Peter L. Lenaker et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution, concentration, particle size, and polymer compositions of microplastics in Lake Michigan and Lake Erie sediment were investigated. Fibers/lines were the most abundant of the five particle types characterized. Microplastic particles were observed in all samples with mean concentrations for particles greater than 0.355 mm of 65.2 p kg(-1) in Lake Michigan samples (n = 20) and 431 p kg(-1) in Lake Erie samples (n = 12).

Sedimentary microplastic concentrations from the Romanian Danube River to the Black Sea

Iulian Pojar et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed information on the concentration of microplastics in sediment along a River-Sea transect from the lower reaches of the Danube River to the Black Sea coast, revealing that isolated areas in the Danube Delta remain relatively pristine with low microplastic particles in some samples.

Microplastic and other anthropogenic microparticles in water and sediments of Lake Simcoe

Miguel Eduardo L. Felismino et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics and other anthropogenic microparticles in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, with lower abundances compared to other large freshwater lakes. Fibers were the most common morphology, while fragments were predominant in manta trawl samples. The distribution of microplastics appeared to be influenced by proximity to urban centers and prevailing winds in surface water manta trawls.

Microplastic pollution in Chinese urban rivers: The influence of urban factors

Yuyao Xu et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a widely discussed emerging global environmental contaminant, originating mainly from land-based sources and accumulating in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. Urban rivers, such as the Fenghua River in Ningbo, China, may play a significant role in transporting microplastic pollution due to the concentrated human activities in urban areas. The study found uneven distribution of microplastic pollution along the river, with concentrations ranging from 300 to 4000 particles per cubic meter, and identified common shapes, sizes, colors, and types of polymers associated with microplastics in the river. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed relationships between microplastic distribution patterns and seasonal factors as well as levels of urbanization, highlighting the challenges in attributing sources to microplastic pollution in urban rivers.

Management optimization of nonpoint source pollution considering the risk of exceeding criteria under uncertainty

Qiangqiang Rong et al.

Summary: A developed IMPMMP model effectively deals with system uncertainties and complexities in NPS pollution management, considering the risk of exceeding criteria in NPS pollution management systems. Results showed that decision maker preferences regarding land use adjustment are crucial, with optimized NPS pollution loads primarily from different land uses and human population.

Plastic bag usage and the policies: A case study of China

Bairong Wang et al.

Summary: The study in China shows a boomerang effect of the pricing policy, successfully reducing the usage of plastic carrier bags but leading to an overall increase in plastic bags due to the excessive use of free inner plastic packaging bags. Old and middle-young consumers behave significantly differently in their plastic bag usage, highlighting loopholes in management and policies.

The projected effects of urbanization and climate change on summer thermal environment in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China

Ziqian Wang et al.

Summary: The impacts of urbanization and climate change on the thermal environment in July over the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are projected in the near future. Both factors contribute to temperature rise, with climate change intensifying human discomfort. Urbanization leads to more comfortable daytime conditions but uncomfortable nighttime, while climate change significantly increases the Humidex throughout the day. Urbanization plays a smaller role in intensifying human discomfort compared to climate change.
