Influence of the extraction conditions on the carbohydrate and phenolic composition of functional pectin from persimmon waste streams

D. A. Mendez et al.

Summary: The study found that extraction of immature persimmon fruit can yield high pectin content and rich polyphenol extracts, with a strong interaction between the two components, showing optimal results at pH 1 and 95 degrees Celsius. These new pectin-based ingredients have great potential as functional foods or natural food ingredients to enhance quality and shelf-life.

Valorization of alginate-extracted seaweed biomass for the development of cellulose-based packaging films

Vera Cebrian-Lloret et al.

Summary: Seaweed residues from Alaria esculenta, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum were used to produce cellulose-based fractions with different purification degrees, showing potential for generating cellulose-based films with the best compromise between functional properties and economical and environmental efficiency. Alaria and Saccharina were found to be richer in cellulose, while Ascophyllum was richer in fucoidan, leading to differences in characteristics of the resulting films.

Sustainable management and recycling of food waste anaerobic digestate: A review

Shanta Dutta et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is widely used to produce biogas from food waste, but a significant amount of nutrient-rich food waste anaerobic digestate (FWD) remains under-utilised. FWD has potential as a nutrient source for microalgal cultivation and biofuel production, and emerging technologies like thermal conversion show promise in converting FWD into value-added products like biochar/hydrochar. Integrated AD with valorisation facilities is encouraged to achieve complete resource utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

A critical review on livestock manure biorefinery technologies: Sustainability, challenges, and future perspectives

Benyamin Khoshnevisan et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for animal protein products has led to challenges in managing livestock manure, with debates ongoing on treatment technologies. Most technologies focus on the solid fraction of manure, leaving the liquid fraction as a potential environmental threat. Anaerobic digestion and bio-oil production are promising solutions, but face obstacles such as high investment costs, operational difficulties, and the need for further research.

Current Status of the Algae Production Industry in Europe: An Emerging Sector of the Blue Bioeconomy

Rita Araujo et al.

Summary: The EU Bioeconomy Strategy is aimed at supporting the sustainable growth of EU bio-based sectors, including algae production. This study reveals significant gaps in knowledge about algae production in Europe, but also highlights the potential of the sector. Algae and Spirulina biomass is primarily used for food and food-related applications, with technological, regulatory, and market barriers limiting further development despite the considerable potential for sustainable growth in the European algae sector.

Influence of preservation methods on biochemical composition and downstream processing of cultivated Saccharina latissima biomass

Eva Albers et al.

Summary: Different preservation methods have varying effects on the composition of Saccharina biomass and its properties, with sun-drying and ensiling significantly reducing protein and alginate content, while freeze-drying and oven-drying have minimal impact. Careful selection of preservation methods is crucial to protect valuable components in Saccharina latissima and ensure high quality product yield.

Zhicheng Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, gold (Au) nanoparticles supported on lignin-tannin (LT) micro-/nanoparticles were prepared via a green and novel method without the use of an additional reducing agent. Increasing the proportion of tannins led to higher amounts of Au species on LT particles, but also decreased the thermal stability of the particles.

Can Fucoidans of Brown Algae Be Considered as Antioxidants?

T. I. Imbs et al.

Summary: The debate over the ability of fucoidans to scavenge reactive oxygen species continues in scientific literature, with some studies showing that they can modulate diseases associated with oxidative stress by regulating antioxidant defense systems and signaling pathways. Other studies suggest a relationship between fucoidans and extracted polyphenolic compounds, such as phlorotannins, which are potent antioxidants. However, due to the lack of clear understanding on whether fucoidans or co-extracted polyphenolic compounds are the main component providing antioxidant activity, further research is needed.
