A review of the removal of microplastics in global wastewater treatment plants: Characteristics and mechanisms

Weiyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the abundance and removal of microplastics in 38 wastewater treatment plants worldwide and found different characteristics of microplastics in different treatment technologies. The research revealed that filter-based treatment technologies showed the best removal efficiency for microplastics, and different types and sizes of microplastics were removed in different ways in various treatment processes.

Microplastic pollution in the Weser estuary and the German North Sea

Lisa Roscher et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and distribution of microplastics (MP) in the estuary and lower stretch of the Weser River in Germany, finding highest concentrations in the 11-500 micron size range with the polymer cluster acrylates/PUR/varnish being dominant. Estimated MP concentrations generally increased in the Turbidity Maximum Zone (TMZ) and decreased towards the open sea, providing valuable insights for future MP monitoring measures.

Microplastic distributions in a domestic wastewater treatment plant: Removal efficiency, seasonal variation and influence of sampling technique

Eric A. Ben-David et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of a municipal WWTP in removing microplastics using different sampling and detection methods. Results showed that the majority of microplastics were removed by the secondary treatment stage, and seasonal variations can affect the concentration of microplastics in effluents.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

Microplastic Mass Concentrations and Distribution in German Bight Waters by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Thermochemolysis Reveal Potential Impact of Marine Coatings: Do Ships Leave Skid Marks?

Christopher Dibke et al.

Summary: This study is the first large-scale survey of microplastics in the German Bight, revealing spatial, temporal, and potential source variations of microplastics in marine environments. The main source of microplastics is hypothesized to be marine (antifouling) coating particles from ships, rather than common packaging waste.

Microplastic pollution in wastewater treatment plants in the city of C?diz: Abundance, removal efficiency and presence in receiving water body

A. A. Franco et al.

Summary: This research aimed to study the sources, characteristics, and removal rates of microplastics in two wastewater treatment plants in Cádiz, with a focus on the presence of resin polymers from industrial activities. The results showed that fibers were the most common form of microplastics, and there were variations in the types and quantities of microplastics in different size ranges.

A complete mass balance for plastics in a wastewater treatment plant-Macroplastics contributes more than microplastics

Lasse Abraham Rasmussen et al.

Summary: A plastic particle mass balance was conducted at Sweden's second-largest wastewater treatment plant, revealing a total plastic load of 202.2 kg d-1, with 73% retained by the screens, 13.6% in the sludge, and 0.4% in the effluent. The missing 12.7% could be due to uncertainties in sampling and measuring.
