New understanding of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs): Neuro (endocrine) toxicity

Liying Dong et al.

Summary: The neurotoxic effects of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are mainly manifested in direct neurotoxicity and disruption of the neuroendocrine system, affecting neurobehavior and reproductive development. The mechanism is related to the complex interaction of neural and endocrine signals.

Occurrence and spatial distribution of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in seawater and sediment of the South China sea

Hongru Feng et al.

Summary: The occurrence and spatial distribution of PBDEs and NBFRs in the South China Sea in 2018 were investigated, with BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane identified as predominant BFRs. Rarely detected NBFRs, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate and 2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine, were found for the first time in the study area, indicating their widespread application in the Pearl River Delta. Preliminary risk assessment suggests low to medium risks to marine organisms at some sites.

Halogenated flame retardants in surface sediments from fourteen estuaries, South China

Jinli Xie et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE and DP in estuarine sediments in South China, with the highest levels found in sediments from the Pearl River Estuary. Additionally, BDE 209 was identified as the predominant congener of PBDEs in estuarine sediments.

Characteristics of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in water and sediment surrounding two e-waste dismantling regions in Taizhou, eastern China

Siyuan Ling et al.

Summary: The concentrations of PBDEs and NBFRs in water samples from two e-waste dismantling zones in Taizhou were comparable, while the levels were higher in sediment samples from the zone that was shut down in 2017. The study also found that certain brominated flame retardants did not decrease in concentration from the center to the outer regions of the sediment samples.

Summary: This study in a highly industrialized lake in Korea found widespread contamination of legacy and novel HFRs, with higher concentrations of HFRs in water and a shift towards the preference for novel HFRs, suggesting a decline in legacy HFRs.

Comprehensive determination of polychlorinated biphenyls and brominated flame retardants in surface sediment samples from Hanoi urban area, Vietnam: Contamination status, accumulation profiles, and potential ecological risks

Anh Quoc Hoang et al.

Summary: The comprehensive study on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in surface sediments from Hanoi, Vietnam revealed higher levels of pollutants in inner-city river sediments compared to the Red River main stream sediments. Different sediment samples showed varied pollutant profiles, indicating potential different sources and/or seasonal variations. Deca-BDE and DBDPE were identified as the predominant BFRs in the sediments.
