Insights into the interaction of microplastic with silver nanoparticles in natural surface water

Penghui Li et al.

Summary: The environmental behavior of AgNPs in natural freshwater and brackish water is primarily affected by water chemistry. MPs can serve as carriers for AgNP transport in natural aquatic environments. Water chemistry and MPs types play crucial roles in the interaction between MPs and AgNPs.

Weathered Microplastics Induce Silver Nanoparticle Formation

Yingnan Huang et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are commonly found in the environment, and research has shown that they can alter the chemical speciation of coexisting contaminants. This study demonstrates that upon solar irradiation, polystyrene (PS) is able to photoreduce dissolved silver (Ag(I)) to metallic silver nanoparticles (Ag(0)-NPs), with carbonyl groups on weathered PS playing a key role in the reduction process. These findings reveal the chemical reactivity of weathered PS and highlight the potential impact of microplastics in the natural environment.

Summary: Tiny plastic particles, including microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are considered emerging contaminants with formation mechanisms such as mechanical abrasion. Research on the environmental fate and ecosystem toxicity of NPs is limited compared to MPs, calling for further exploration in these areas.

Role of polystyrene microplastics in sunlight-mediated transformation of silver in aquatic environments: Mechanisms, kinetics and toxicity

Weicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Sunlight-oxidative ageing is a critical process for microplastics in aquatic environments, and the generation of O-2(center dot-), O-1(2), and center dot OH can alter metal speciation. This study found that under simulated sunlight irradiation, polystyrene microplastics play a key role in mediating silver speciation, reducing Ag +, stabilizing silver nanoparticles, and suppressing acute toxicity to various aquatic organisms.

Influence of polystyrene microplastic and nanoplastic on copper toxicity in two freshwater microalgae

Jun-Kit Wan et al.

Summary: The study found that microalgae are sensitive to copper but tolerant to polystyrene microplastics and nanoplastics. However, the presence of microplastics and nanoplastics can increase the toxicity of copper, leading to oxidative stress and morphological changes.

Lifetime Accumulation of Microplastic in Children and Adults

Nur Hazimah Mohamed Nor et al.

Summary: The study presents a probabilistic lifetime exposure model for microplastics that considers intake through various pathways, simulating concentrations in different parts of the body and validating against empirical data. Results indicate a small contribution of microplastics to overall chemical intake. Future research should focus on exploring the contributions of other food types to microplastic exposure.

Effects of microplastics on plant growth and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in a soil spiked with ZnO nanoparticles

Weiwei Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of microplastics have varying effects on maize growth, with high doses of PLA potentially causing strong phytotoxicity and reducing biomass. ZnO nanoparticles had minimal effects on plant growth, but led to zinc accumulation in plants and an increase in soil pH. Both microplastics and ZnO nanoparticles influenced the composition and diversity of AM fungal communities.

Aged microplastics decrease the bioavailability of coexisting heavy metals to microalga Chlorella vulgaris

Zezheng Wang et al.

Summary: Environmental aging of ubiquitous microplastics affects the growth of microalgae, with aged microplastics showing greater inhibition than virgin microplastics. Heavy metals such as copper and cadmium also significantly inhibit cell growth, and toxicity increases with higher concentrations. The combined toxicity of aged microplastics with heavy metals is less than that of individual heavy metals, indicating a potential interaction between different pollutants.
