A catchment-scale assessment of the sanitary condition of treated wastewater and river water based on fecal indicators and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp

Liliana Serwecinska et al.

Summary: Urbanization and population growth have created significant sanitation challenges in cities and communities worldwide. This study conducted an extensive assessment of sanitary conditions of river water and treated wastewater from seventeen WWTPs along the Pilica River in central Poland, identifying potential hot spots of sanitary hazards. The presence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bacteria in effluent wastewaters and river water samples was highlighted as a significant public health concern.

The Occurrence and Characterization of Class I, II, and III Integrons Among Carbapenemase-Producing Clinical Strains of Acinetobacter baumannii in Tehran, Iran

Summary: The study identified a high prevalence of carbapenemase-producing A. baumannii strains carrying integrons in clinical settings, indicating a public health concern. It suggests that class 1 integrons may serve as predictive biomarkers for the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in clinical settings, although integrons in these strains do not carry carbapenemases.
