Aquatic life criteria & human health ambient water quality criteria derivations and probabilistic risk assessments of 7 benzenes in China

Bo Fan et al.

Summary: This study conducted aquatic life criteria, ambient water quality criteria, and health risk assessments for 7 benzenes in the Tai Lake Basin using various methods. Nitrobenzene had the highest aquatic life criteria value, while recommended national human health AWQC values were found to provide effective protection for most of the population in China. Carbazole and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene were found to pose significant human health risks in Tai Lake.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 30 river ecosystems, Taiwan: Sources, and ecological and human health risks

Ching-Chang Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and fish from 30 major rivers in Taiwan, and assessed the risks these PAHs pose to river ecosystems and human health. The results showed that the concentrations and sources of PAHs differed between sediments and fish, and the accumulation of different PAH compounds in fish was species-specific. The study also found significant correlations between PAH concentrations in sediments and fish with water and air quality variables, indicating potential sources of PAH contamination.

Health risk assessment and development of human health ambient water quality criteria for PBDEs in China

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: PBDEs are highly efficient brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) widely distributed in various environmental media. The study found heavy pollution of PBDEs in eastern and southeastern coastal regions of China, with varying concentrations in different exposure media. Dust exposure was the primary pathway for urban and rural residents in ordinary regions, while dietary exposure was the main pathway for residents in key regions and occupational workers. BDE-209 was identified as the most serious individual PBDE congener in China.

Predicting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water by a multiscale feature extraction-based deep learning approach

Liang Dong et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid surface water PAH prediction model combining two-stage decomposition and deep learning algorithm was proposed for accurate and effective prediction of PAHs in surface water. Empirical results from eight major rivers in Saxony, Germany showed that the model outperformed other benchmark data-driven methods, with good prediction performance.

Xianxian Chen et al.

Summary: Bioaccessibility/bioavailability of PAHs is an important criterion in risk assessment, with research development divided into stages focusing on different aspects such as distribution coefficient and degradation methods. The current research trend includes establishing analytical methods for PAH derivatives and optimizing in vitro digestion methods.
