Effect of concentration and hydraulic reaction time on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds in a membrane bioreactor inoculated with activated sludge

Ana B. Rios-Miguel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial removal of six pharmaceuticals in a membrane bioreactor and found that each pharmaceutical had a different average removal efficiency. The removal rate of each compound increased proportionally with higher pharmaceutical influent concentrations, but surprisingly not the removal percentage. The study also identified changes in microbial community in response to the increment of pharmaceutical concentration, with certain bacteria showing significant increases in abundance.
