Detoxifying SARS-CoV-2 antiviral drugs from model and real wastewaters by industrial waste-derived multiphase photocatalysts

Mirabbos Hojamberdiev et al.

Summary: The use of photocatalysis is effective in degrading antiviral drugs in wastewater, and multiphase photocatalysts synthesized from industrial waste and WO3 show high efficiency in degrading SARS-CoV-2 antiviral drugs. The results demonstrate that the multiphase photocatalysts have a high degradation rate for lopinavir and ritonavir, and they are non-toxic to the environment.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 originated from China has affected the global economy and human resources. Research on medical treatments including herbal remedies, antiviral drugs, and vaccines is ongoing. SARS-CoV-2 is more virulent than its ancestors due to mutations in the spike protein(s) facilitating viral attachment to host cells.

Growth, clinical and neurodevelopmental outcomes at school age are similar for children who received 1-year lamivudine or lopinavir/ritonavir HIV prophylaxis in early life

Nicolas Nagot et al.

Summary: In the ANRS 12174 trial, there was no significant difference in growth, clinical, and neuropsychological outcomes between HIV-exposed uninfected African neonates who received lopinavir-ritonavir and lamivudine prophylaxis treatment during school age. The study suggests that there were no long-term side effects of lopinavir-ritonavir in children treated with this antiretroviral drug in early life.

A SARS-CoV-2 cytopathicity dataset generated by high-content screening of a large drug repurposing collection

Bernhard Ellinger et al.

Summary: The study applied high-content screening to a collection of 5632 compounds, identifying 258 hits with potential inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV-2 cytopathicity. Known inhibitors were validated for their ability to reduce the cytopathic effects of the virus, providing confidence in the assay's validity. The data from high-content screening are suitable for reanalysis across different drug classes and indications, offering additional insights into SARS-CoV-2 mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies.

Yuya Hashiguchi et al.

Summary: The study assessed the quality and toxicity levels of final discharge from three different mills, showing that mill A with a bio-polishing plant had lower BOD, COD, and TSS values but higher toxicity in FET test compared to mill B and C. The effluent of mill B exhibited the highest toxicity, while mill C had lower survival rates after hatching.

Precision therapeutic targets for COVID-19

Zachary A. Krumm et al.

Summary: Since late 2019, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a widespread global pandemic with millions infected and hundreds of thousands dead. Current clinical management primarily involves supportive care, with some medications showing modest benefits in hospitalized patients. No specific antiviral drugs for SARS-CoV-2 are available, but several vaccines have been approved for use, highlighting the potential for a multi-drug cocktail strategy targeting key viral proteins to effectively inhibit virus replication and limit spread.

Predicted occurrence, ecotoxicological risk and environmentally acquired resistance of antiviral drugs associated with COVID-19 in environmental waters

Keisuke Kuroda et al.

Summary: Antiviral drugs used for treating COVID-19 patients can pose potential ecotoxicological risks in aquatic environments. Efforts are needed to improve the management and treatment of drug residues in wastewater to mitigate environmental impacts. While certain drugs may pose high risks to aquatic organisms, the likelihood of wild animals developing drug resistance is estimated to be low.
