Avitene™ Microfibrillar Collagen Hemostat for Adjunctive Hemostasis in Surgical Procedures: A Systematic Literature Review

David J. Cziperle

Summary: Adequate hemostasis during surgical procedures is crucial for successful patient outcomes and reduced healthcare resource utilization. Topical hemostatic agents can act as catalysts for the clotting cascade or as a scaffold to promote platelet activation or aggregation. Health care providers lack comparative data on feasibility, clinical effectiveness, advantages, and limitations of each topical absorbable hemostatic agent, which is important for appropriate product choice in diverse surgical settings.

Modified porous carboxymethyl chitin microspheres by an organic solvent-free process for rapid hemostasis

Fan Leng et al.

Summary: A rapid and effective hemorrhage control method was developed using organic solvent-free carboxymethyl chitin microspheres loaded with calcium ions and dopamine polymerization. These modified microspheres demonstrated good biocompatibility and superior hemostatic performance compared to traditional controls, significantly reducing bleeding time in a femoral artery/vein cut model. This study suggests great potential for rapid hemostasis using these modified microspheres.

Vasoconstrictor and coagulation activator entrapped chitosan based composite hydrogel for rapid bleeding control

M. Nivedhitha Sundaram et al.

Summary: The composite hydrogel prepared in this study, 2%Cs-0.25%PA-0.25%Ca, showed rapid blood clotting by accelerating RBC/platelet aggregation and activation of the coagulation cascade. In vivo studies on rat liver and femoral artery hemorrhage model demonstrated the efficiency of the composite hydrogel in achieving hemostasis in a shorter time than commercial hemostatic agents.

Ultrafast Self-Gelling and Wet Adhesive Powder for Acute Hemostasis and Wound Healing

Xin Peng et al.

Summary: The PEI/PAA/QCS powder is an ultrafast self-gelling and wet adhesive hemostatic material that can quickly absorb blood and form a pressure-resistant physical barrier to stop bleeding effectively. It has been demonstrated to work well on various irregularly shaped, high-pressure bleeding wounds and can also promote wound healing.

Polysaccharides-modified chitosan as improved and rapid hemostasis foam sponges

Xiaohui Wei et al.

Summary: The serial hemostatic sponges made of polysaccharides-modified chitosan foam sponges demonstrated excellent water-absorbing quality, improved mechanical performance, and superior hemostasis capability both in vitro and in vivo. The hemostatic mechanism involves adhering/activating red blood cells/platelets to form robust blood clots, making it a promising option for emergency trauma treatment in civilian and military settings.
