Preventing new episodes of bipolar disorder in adults: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Anastasiya Nestsiarovich et al.

Summary: This study examined the efficacy of maintenance pharmacotherapy for bipolar disorder by analyzing data from high-quality randomized controlled trials. The findings suggest that psychotropic monotherapy, including lithium, mood stabilizing anticonvulsants, and second generation antipsychotics, is more effective in preventing new episodes of BD compared to placebo. Additionally, specific drugs such as aripiprazole, asenapine, lithium, olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone long-acting showed significantly lower risk of new BD episodes.

Effectiveness of mindfulness-based intervention on psychotic symptoms for patients with schizophrenia: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yu-Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that mindfulness-based intervention has significant positive effects on psychotic symptoms, positive symptoms, negative symptoms, depressive symptoms, and rehospitalization duration in patients with schizophrenia. The improvement in negative symptoms can last for at least 3 to 6 months. Nurses-led mindfulness-based intervention is more effective in improving positive symptoms compared to psychologists-led intervention.

Recent Updates on Electro-Convulsive Therapy in Patients with Depression

Mi Jin Park et al.

Summary: ECT has been established as an effective treatment modality for patients with treatment-resistant depression and certain subtypes of depression. Studies have shown that pharmacotherapy and maintenance ECT are more effective than a placebo in preventing recurrence after ECT. ECT is evolving towards reducing cognitive side effects and maximizing therapeutic effects, with potential for further expansion in the future with more robust evidence and clarified mechanisms.

Electroconvulsive Therapy in Mania: A Review of 80 Years of Clinical Experience

Alby Elias et al.

Summary: While electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is no longer the first-line treatment for mania, recent research has shown promising results in its use, including the adoption of ultrabrief ECT, combination with pharmacological agents, and use as a maintenance strategy. Technical parameters, such as treatment frequency, electrode placements, and pulse width, play a critical role in its efficacy.

Summary: A network meta-analysis was conducted on psychological interventions for schizophrenia/psychosis in adults, with mindfulness-based psychoeducation consistently ranked as the most likely intervention to reduce total symptoms. However, all studies were conducted in China, highlighting the need for more international research to validate these findings in different cultural contexts.

Efficacy and tolerability of atypical antipsychotics for acute bipolar depression: a network meta-analysis

Aditi Kadakia et al.

Summary: This NMA in adults with bipolar depression compared the efficacy and tolerability of AAP monotherapy. Lurasidone, olanzapine, and quetiapine showed the largest improvement in depressive symptoms compared to placebo, while cariprazine had a smaller treatment effect. Aripiprazole and ziprasidone were ineffective for treating bipolar depression. Lurasidone had a larger improvement in CGI-BP-S score compared to cariprazine and ziprasidone, but similar to quetiapine and olanzapine. Lurasidone and aripiprazole had similar weight gain compared to placebo based on short term studies.

Psychotic Depression: Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment

Summary: Psychotic depression is considered an independent trait that may accompany mood disorders of varying severity, with acute treatment typically involving a combination of antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, or electroconvulsive therapy. Limited information exists on maintenance treatment for unipolar psychotic depression and on acute and chronic treatment for psychotic bipolar disorder, leading to a reliance on clinical experience for treatment decision-making.
