Fracture mechanism and damage characteristics of coal subjected to a water jet under different triaxial stress conditions

Zhaolong Ge et al.

Summary: The study investigated the fracture mechanism of coal under triaxial stress when subjected to a water jet, discussing distinct fracture patterns with and without triaxial stress. It found that the rock-breaking ability of the water jet was significantly impaired under triaxial stress conditions, with the main component of coal failure transitioning from tensile to shear failure. The study's findings provide valuable insight for the application of water jet technology in deep CBM recovery.

Long-term effects of CO2-water-coal interactions on structural and mechanical changes of bituminous coal

Guanglei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the long-term effects of CO2 injection on the structural and mechanical properties of water-saturated coal were investigated. It was found that the presence of water during CO2 injection resulted in significant changes in the mechanical properties of coal, primarily due to sorption-induced cracking causing structural damage. The extent of reduction in mechanical properties was less compared to pure CO2 injection, potentially due to the hindrance of CO2 sorption by water.

Crack propagation patterns and factors controlling complex crack network formation in coal bodies during tri-axial supercritical carbon dioxide fracturing

Hao Yan et al.

Summary: Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing is an environmentally-friendly waterless mining technology that has attracted increasing attention during the safe mining of coal resources. Laboratory tests were used to study the fracturing process of coal bodies, revealing the theoretical guidance for applying and promoting SC-CO2 fracturing in coal mines.

Prediction of fracture initiation pressure in multiple failure hydraulic fracturing modes: Three-dimensional stress model considering borehole deformation

Jianyu Zhong et al.

Summary: A new model for predicting the fracture initiation pressure in hydraulic fracturing under a three-dimensional stress state was established in this study, which improved accuracy by 364.4% compared to classical theories. Eleven fracture initiation failure modes for coal seam hydraulic fracturing were proposed, with field test results validating the theoretical model with a maximum error of 5.5%. The study provides more precise guidance for hydraulic fracturing projects.

Permeability Enhancement and Methane Drainage Capacity of Tree-type Boreholes to Stimulate Low-permeability Coal Seams

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effectiveness of tree-type boreholes in improving coal seam permeability and promoting methane extraction based on data from a Chinese coal mine. Tree-type boreholes can significantly increase methane extraction rates and effective influence radius compared to conventional drainage programs.
