A comprehensive assessment on material, exergy and emission networks for the integrated iron and steel industry

Jingchao Sun et al.

Summary: The intensive energy consumption and high pollutant emission are obstacles to the sustainable development of the iron and steel industry. The study found that the auxiliary processes play a critical role in the overall energy and carbon emission intensity, accounting for about 28.85% of the total. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze factors such as energy structure, technology capacity, product structure, and environmental conditions to provide relevant suggestions for energy management and emission reduction in the industry.

A framework of indicators for associating material stocks and flows to service provisioning: Application for Japan 1990-2015

Hiroki Tanikawa et al.

Summary: More countries are reporting national accounts for material stocks and flows to promote sustainable use of natural resources. The research proposes a framework linking material stocks and flows to societal benefit and natural capital, with six indicators quantitatively relating material consumption and societal benefits. Japan's material flow productivity doubled from 1.6 US$/kg to 3.2 US$/kg, mainly due to improvements in stock retention rates and circular material use.

Increased carbon footprint of materials production driven by rise in investments

Edgar G. Hertwich

Summary: The production of materials is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, and policies are being implemented worldwide to increase material efficiency and promote the circular economy. Research shows that greenhouse gas emissions from material production have been steadily increasing, with a majority of the growth coming from China. The carbon footprint of materials is mainly attributed to construction and the manufacturing of durable products, and policies should focus on addressing the growing capital stocks in emerging economies.

Do sectoral material efficiency improvements add up to greenhouse gas emissions reduction on an economy-wide level?

Yingying Lu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the contribution of material efficiency (ME) improvements to climate mitigation, finding that eco-design and new technologies in iron and steel as well as non-metallic minerals can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The construction sector, with its massive use of non-metallic minerals, has significant potential for mitigation, but efficiency improvements and reduced demand may also lead to rebound effects.
