Evaluating environmental impacts and economic performance of remanufacturing electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries

Summary: This study evaluates the environmental and economic impacts of remanufacturing LIBs in China, the largest EV producer. Results show that remanufacturing LIBs can significantly reduce GHG emissions, water consumption and production costs, with DPR method showing the most potential. Sensitivity analysis suggests large profit margins for remanufacturing LIBs. Potential water-carbon conflicts in developing LIB remanufacturing industry should be considered for future industry planning.

Summary: Energy-storage systems, particularly Mg-S batteries, are being developed as alternatives to traditional batteries due to their potential environmental benefits. This study provides a prospective assessment of the environmental performance of theoretical Mg-S batteries in different use-phase applications through life cycle assessment methodology. The results suggest that Mg-S batteries could potentially outperform commercially available counterparts in certain impact categories, but technical challenges must be overcome to achieve this.
