Molecular and Cellular Insights into the Development of Uterine Fibroids

Alba Machado-Lopez et al.

Summary: Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign gynecologic tumor, affecting around 70% of women of reproductive age. This hormone-dependent smooth-muscle formations can cause symptoms like pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, and recurrent abortion. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing have allowed for the detection of driver mutations, shedding light on the genomic instability of leiomyomas. Studies suggest that each leiomyoma originates from the clonal expansion of a single transformed somatic stem cell of the myometrium.

The rs9340799 polymorphism of the estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) gene and its association with breast cancer susceptibility

Shing Cheng Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the association between the ESR1 rs9340799 polymorphism and breast cancer susceptibility. The results showed no significant correlation between the polymorphism and breast cancer susceptibility, suggesting limited potential as a genetic marker for breast cancer. Subgroup analyses by ethnicity, menopausal status, and study quality also revealed no statistically significant association.
