Optimizing hybrid offshore wind farms for cost-competitive hydrogen production in Germany

Michele Scolaro et al.

Summary: Nearly 96% of global hydrogen production comes from fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing unsold offshore wind electricity for hydrogen production offers a low-carbon pathway. This study investigates the cost competitiveness of offshore wind-based hydrogen production in ancillary service markets, as well as determining the optimal size of a hydrogen electrolyser. The findings suggest that offshore wind-based hydrogen production must participate in ancillary service markets to generate positive revenues and be cost competitive at current wind generation levels.

Techno-economic analysis of long-duration energy storage and flexible power generation technologies to support high-variable renewable energy grids

Chad A. Hunter et al.

Summary: As variable renewable energy penetration increases, clean power systems will need long-duration energy storage or low-carbon generation to meet the demand. Current research shows that hydrogen systems with geologic storage and natural gas with carbon capture are the least-cost low-carbon technologies, with compressed air and pumped thermal storage potentially being the least-cost options in the current capital cost scenario under uncertainty. A new storage system using heavy-duty vehicle fuel cells could significantly reduce the levelized cost of energy and help enable very high renewable energy grids.
