Why electricity market models yield different results: Carbon pricing in a model-comparison experiment

O. Ruhnau et al.

Summary: The European electricity industry is a highly studied example of carbon pricing within the world's largest cap-and-trade scheme, with numerical models used to forecast future carbon prices and emissions. Different power sector models show significant variations in estimating emissions reduction in the European power sector at different carbon prices, with differences attributed to the consideration of market-driven decommissioning of coal and lignite-fired power plants within the models.

The decarbonisation of the EU heating sector through electrification: A parametric analysis

Georg Thomassen et al.

Summary: The study indicates that heat electrification is an effective decarbonisation option that can significantly reduce energy-related emissions. Most national power systems can accommodate higher heat-electrification rates, while flexible electric demand plays a crucial role in achieving larger heat-electrification shares.

Do minimum trading capacities for the cross-zonal exchange of electricity lead to welfare losses?

David Schoenheit et al.

Summary: The analysis investigates the impact of adjustments made to meet the minimum trading capacities requirement on the overall welfare of markets and grids in Central Western Europe. It shows that increasing the minimum trading capacities may lead to higher congestion management costs, resulting in net welfare losses.

Decarbonization of a district heating system with a combination of solar heat and bioenergy: A techno-economic case study in the Northern European context

Elina Maki et al.

Summary: Our study explores the impact of solar heat on decarbonization efforts in a Nordic district heating network predominantly fueled by bioenergy. By utilizing a dynamic model created with Apros(R) simulation software using real data from a Finnish municipality, we assess different decarbonization scenarios with varying combinations of solar thermal collectors, thermal energy storage, and restrictions on solar heat integration. The results demonstrate that achieving zero emissions in the summer requires an annual solar share of 13.2% at a levelized cost of heat (LCoH) of 44 V/MWh, supported by thermal energy storage and strategic planning. Moreover, pursuing higher solar shares without careful consideration can actually increase greenhouse gas emissions compared to base cases, underscoring the importance of prioritizing emission reductions over simply increasing renewable energy integration in solar heat investments for district heating utilities.

Improving CHP flexibility by integrating thermal energy storage and power-to-heat technologies into the energy system

K. Lepiksaar et al.

Summary: This paper explores technical solutions to improve the flexibility of combined heat and power (CHP) plants for better energy efficiency in the system. By coupling CHPs with electric boilers and TES, it helps to balance heat and power loads and introduce renewable energy sources. The results demonstrate a significant reduction in natural gas consumption and heat rejection with these technical solutions implemented.
