Fluid and heat flow in enhanced geothermal systems considering fracture geometrical and topological complexities: An extended embedded discrete fracture model

Shuai Zheng et al.

Summary: The paper proposes an extended embedded discrete fracture model (XEDFM) for simulating fluid and heat flow in fractured reservoirs with 3-D non-planar fracture networks, which offers more flexibility and advantages compared to conventional models. By systematically validating XEDFM, the study investigates the impacts of fracture roughness and heat extraction strategy on hydrothermal behaviors and heat mining efficiency.

Development of 3-D Curved Fracture Swarms in Shale Rock Driven by Rapid Fluid Pressure Buildup: Insights From Numerical Modeling

Sanbai Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel numerical approach to model the evolution of fracture swarms with three-dimensional nonplanar geometries in organic-rich shale. The results suggest five basic fracture interaction modes between neighboring fractures, and indicate that the evolving fracture swarms exhibit simultaneous, alternant, and differential growth characteristics at different development phases. The study also elucidates the mechanical mechanisms that determine the evolution of three-dimensional curved fracture swarms.

Fault reactivation and propagation during the 2017 Pohang earthquake sequence

Jin-Han Ree et al.

Summary: A commission of the Korean government investigated the 2017 Mw 5.5 Pohang earthquake and found that seismic activity was triggered by fluid injection from the nearby enhanced geothermal system. The aftershock sequence followed Omori's law, with a significant increase in stress around the SS4 segment corresponding to the M-L 4.6 event. Analysis suggests that all rupture planes, except for SS4, are optimally oriented for reactivation, highlighting the potential risk associated with fluid injection into this fault.
