Ancient Adelie penguin colony revealed by snowmelt at Cape Irizar, Ross Sea, Antarctica

Steven D. Emslie

Summary: Research in Ross Sea revealed that fresh penguin remains exposed by melting snow are actually ancient, suggesting recent snowmelt has revealed previously frozen carcasses. This indicates enhanced marine productivity during a warm period from 4000-2000 years ago in the penguin optimum phase.

Genetic diversity in clustered colonies of an Antarctic marine mesopredator: a role for habitat quality?

Summary: This study assessed the population genetic structure of Adelie penguins from three adjacent colonies, revealing significant genetic heterogeneity among colonies. The results indicate meta-population dynamics and suggest relationships with habitat quality.

Reconstructing atmospheric circulation and sea-ice extent in the West Antarctic over the past 200 years using data assimilation

Quentin Dalaiden et al.

Summary: By reconstructing the climate variability of the past two centuries in the West Antarctic sector, this study reveals long-term trends, such as the reduction of sea ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector starting around 1850 and the strengthening and eastward shift of the Amundsen Sea Low pressure after 1950. The study also shows that the sea-ice variations in the Ross Sea sector are strongly related to the Amundsen Sea Low pressure variability over the past two centuries, including recent trends, while the link between ASL and sea-ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector changes with time, becoming stronger in recent decades.

The call of the emperor penguin: Legal responses to species threatened by climate change

Stephanie Jenouvrier et al.

Summary: The risk of species extinction is accelerating due to anthropogenic climate change, with emperor penguins facing the threat of becoming quasi-extinct by 2100 if current energy system trends and policies continue to lead to a decline in sea ice as projected by climate models. Protective measures under legal frameworks, such as listing the species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, are urgently needed to mitigate this risk.

Specific occupation of penguins under Neoglacial cooling on the Scott Coast, Antarctica

Lianjiao Yang et al.

Summary: Drastic climate change poses a threat to penguins' ecological security. Previous studies have suggested that penguins disappeared from the Scott Coast around 2000 years ago due to either cooling or warming. However, recent findings show that penguin colonies were not abandoned on Dunlop Island around 2000 years ago, and there was a permanent snow/ice cover around 1700 years ago, indicating a Neoglacial cooling period. The abandonment of penguin colonies on the Scott Coast was likely caused by increased coastal sea ice and/or snow/ice accumulation during this cooling period.
