FROG: A global machine-learning temperature calibration for branched GDGTs in soils and peats

Pierre Vequaud et al.

Summary: The study developed a new global terrestrial brGDGT temperature calibration using a machine learning algorithm. This improved model is more accurate and robust than previous global soil calibrations, and takes into account non-linear relationships to better represent environmental complexity.

Characterization of a glacial neotropical rainforest from pollen and spore assemblages (Colonia, Sao Paulo, Brazil)

Adriana Mercedes Camejo Aviles et al.

Summary: This article describes palynomorph samples collected from the Colonia basin, including their morphological characteristics and ecological information. The palynomorphs date back to the penultimate glacial and represent three forest types in the region. These palynomorphs provide important reference material for future pollen studies and reveal vulnerable species that may have disappeared.

Changes in obliquity drive tree cover shifts in eastern tropical South America

Jaqueline Q. Ferreira et al.

Summary: By investigating sediment records from eastern tropical South America, it was found that obliquity has a significant influence on the expansion and contraction of tree and grass cover in tropical landscapes. The length of the dry season was identified as a crucial factor in controlling tree cover in these regions.

Orbital controls on eastern African hydroclimate in the Pleistocene

Rachel L. Lupien et al.

Summary: Understanding the ancient climate of eastern Africa is crucial for understanding early human evolution and migration. This study presents records of rainfall from ancient lake sediments, providing insights into the control mechanisms of Pleistocene climate in the region. The results suggest that eastern African rainfall was mainly influenced by low-latitude summer insolation during the early and middle Pleistocene, with little impact from glacial-interglacial cycles. However, high-latitude-driven climate processes emerged during the last interglacial to the present, when glacial-interglacial cycles were strong. The findings highlight the variable response of eastern African rainfall to different forcing mechanisms throughout time.

Cancellation of the Precessional Cycle in δ18O Records During the Early Pleistocene

Anne L. Moree et al.

Summary: During the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, the dominant pacing of glacial-interglacial cycles in deep-ocean delta O-18 records changed substantially. The absence of the precessional cycle during the Early Pleistocene can be explained by cancellation of antiphased precessional signals from the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean. This cancellation potential is widespread for typical signal strengths of the Early Pleistocene, suggesting that the true periodicity of the glacial cycles may be concealed in deep-sea delta O-18 records.

A global Bayesian temperature calibration for lacustrine brGDGTs

Pablo Martinez-Sosa et al.

Summary: Despite lacking a global calibration, the distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) in lakes is mainly controlled by temperature, which explains 58% of the variance. Water chemistry has a weaker influence, with pH and conductivity only explaining 24% of the variance. Developing a new Bayesian calibration based on a comprehensive dataset allows for accurate reconstruction of continental temperatures using lacustrine brGDGTs.

Relict populations of Araucaria angustifolia will be isolated, poorly protected, and unconnected under climate and land-use change in Brazil

Mario M. Tagliari et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential connectivity of the Araucaria Mixed Forest in Brazil's Atlantic Forest under climate change and current land-use. It found that only 7% of Araucaria's current distribution is encompassed by protected areas, with future connectivity expected to decrease by 77% compared to current projections.

Formal ratification of subseries for the Pleistocene Series of the Quaternary System

Martin J. Head et al.

Summary: The International Union of Geological Sciences ratified two proposals formalizing the division of the Pleistocene into three subseries/ subepochs, including the Lower Pleistocene, Upper Pleistocene, and Middle Pleistocene. This division is consistent with the similarly subdivided Holocene Series/Epoch.
