Drought and the collapse of the Tiwanaku Civilization: New evidence from Lake Orurillo, Peru

T. Elliott Arnold et al.

Summary: Tiwanaku was a significant state level polity in the south-central Andes from around 500 to 1000 CE, with complex society development facilitated by intensified agricultural systems relying on monsoonal precipitation. The collapse of the political regime at the end of the first millennium CE may be linked to a prolonged period of aridity, supported by isotopic proxies extracted from lake sediments.

Towards a rigorous understanding of societal responses to climate change

Dagomar Degroot et al.

Summary: The scholarship of the 'history of climate and society' indicates that natural climatic changes had significant impacts on human societies before anthropogenic global warming. Despite widespread interest in this field, there are biases and challenges in accounting for the local effects and spatiotemporal heterogeneity of past climate changes. Researchers propose an interdisciplinary framework to understand climate-society interactions and uncover five pathways by which populations have survived and thrived in the face of climatic pressures.
