Long-term trajectories of medicine use among older adults experiencing polypharmacy in Australia

Michael O. Falster et al.

Summary: The study found that polypharmacy among older people is a sustained phenomenon, with 79% still experiencing polypharmacy after one year. People in the sustained polypharmacy group with lower numbers of medicines tended to have relatively stable trajectories, while those with higher numbers experienced greater seasonal variation in the type and number of medicines used.

Optimizing Therapy to Prevent Avoidable Hospital Admissions in Multimorbid Older Adults (OPERAM): cluster randomised controlled trial

Manuel R. Blum et al.

Summary: This study found that inappropriate prescribing was common in older adults with multimorbidity and polypharmacy admitted to hospital, and could be reduced through pharmacotherapy optimization intervention. However, this intervention did not have a significant effect on drug related hospital admissions, suggesting the need for additional efforts to improve patient outcomes.
