Considering sex as a biological variable will require a global shift in science culture

Rebecca M. Shansky et al.

Summary: For over half a century, male rodents have been the default model organism in preclinical neuroscience research, leading to higher misdiagnosis and adverse effects in women. Studying both sexes is crucial, but incentives and funding structures often discourage researchers. Calls for cultural and structural changes in research and evaluation processes are needed to create a more equitable knowledge base.

Metabotropic group II glutamate receptors in the basolateral amygdala mediate cue-triggered increases in incentive motivation

Caroline Garceau et al.

Summary: Reward-associated cues can trigger incentive motivation for reward via Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer, with glutamate signaling in the basolateral amygdala playing a role in modulating cue-triggered increases in motivation. The study showed that metabotropic group II glutamate receptors in the BLA mediate cue-triggered potentiation of incentive motivation for reward, suppressing both instrumental pursuit of the reward and anticipatory approach behavior.
